Trump's latest tariff twist: A break for Mexico and Canada

Tariff holdTwo days after putting 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, President Trump said on Thursday that he will largely lift them — the latest twist in his on-again, off-again approach to an issue that has sent markets into a tailspin.

Trump started to tap the brakes on the tariffs on Wednesday, after talking to the Big Three U.S. automakers. And then after a conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday, he said on social media that he would give a break to all Mexican goods covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

A few hours later, he signed executive orders that included relief for Canadian goods covered by the USMCA.

Trump told reporters the shift had nothing to do with recent market downturns, which he downplayed as "a little short term interruption," blaming foreign countries and "globalist companies" for "ripping off" the United States.

U.S., Israel reject Gaza reconstruction plan backed by Arab nations

Arab nations reject US planArab nations, led by Egypt, that have strongly rejected President Trump's proposal for the U.S. to "take over" the Gaza Strip and displace its more than 2 million Palestinian residents so the enclave can be turned into a luxury real estate development have offered an alternative plan. Leaders from the 22-nation Arab League attended a summit in Cairo Tuesday and unanimously adopted the Egyptian proposal, which does not foresee any of Gaza's residents being forced to leave during reconstruction.

The Trump administration, along with its close allies in Israel, quickly rejected the plan, with the White House reiterating the president's contention that the destruction wrought on Gaza during Israel's 15-month war with Hamas has made the enclave uninhabitable.

Palestinians who have spoken with CBS News in Gaza have all vehemently rejected any bid to force them from the territory, and the head of the United Nations and some others have suggested that making them leave would amount to ethnic cleansing.

Hamas backed the Arab plan, but has consistently refused to disarm as part of any ceasefire agreement, something Israel considers essential.

US pauses intelligence sharing with Ukraine

Mike WaltzThe future of US support for Ukraine is being pushed further into doubt, with National Security Adviser Mike Waltz confirming on Wednesday that the US has paused intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

"We have, we have taken a step back," Waltz told reporters when asked about suspending intelligence sharing.

He added that the Trump administration was pausing and reviewing "all aspects of this relationship".

French President Emmanuel Macron later announced a meeting of European army chiefs in Paris next week, saying in a televised speech that France must be prepared to move forward without US help.

Netanyahu's funding for Hamas via Qatar enabled October 7 invasion, Shin Bet reveals

Netanasyahu funded Hamas for years

While the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) took a significant amount of responsibility for the disasters on October 7 in its report published unexpectedly on Tuesday, it also implicated Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by implying that his policies regarding the Temple Mount, the treatment of Palestinian prisoners, and the judicial reform led to Hamas’s decision to initiate its long-planned invasion.

The report never mentions Netanyahu by name, and technically, some of these policies were those of then-national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. Netanyahu, though, as prime minister, allowed many of the policies to continue despite having the power to stop them.

Ben-Gvir vastly expanded the volume of Jewish visitors to the Temple Mount compared to prior years, violated some of the rules of what activities could be performed on the Temple Mount, publicly called for completely changing the “status quo” there, and enforced policies that worsened the treatment of Palestinian prisoners.

Ukraine selling T-shirts with Zelensky quote from Trump-Vance meeting

Trump scolds ZelenskyyThe Ukrainian government has launched a T-shirt fundraising effort seeking to capitalize on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s now-infamous Oval Office meeting Friday with President Trump and Vice President Vance.

The meeting, which unraveled to such an extent that a joint press conference between the two sides scheduled for afterward was canceled, included multiple moments that went viral, such as when Zelensky was criticized for not wearing a suit. He has dressed in more military-themed garb since Russia invaded his country three years ago.

Trump wants Palestinians out of Gaza. Here are Egypt's plans to keep them there

Trump wants Palestinians out Gaza

Egypt is formulating plans for a regional solution to the aftermath of the devastating war in Gaza that counter President Donald Trump's idea of permanently displacing Palestinians from the territory to neighboring Arab states.

Egypt, which borders both Gaza and Israel, views any mass displacement of Palestinians into its territory as a red line.

Leaders from Arab League states are meeting in Cairo on Tuesday to jointly reject calls for displacement and to discuss counter-proposals spearheaded by Egypt in close coordination with powerhouse Saudi Arabia and others in the region.

The meeting, however, comes as the ceasefire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas is at risk of unraveling, threatening Egypt's plans for the reconstruction of Gaza after the war.

Pope Francis Suffers New Breathing Crises, Is Back On Noninvasive Ventilation

Pope Francis suffers setbackPope Francis suffered two new episodes of acute respiratory crises Monday and was put back on noninvasive mechanical ventilation, the Vatican said.

Francis had inhaled “copious” amounts of mucus in another setback in what has become a more than two-week battle to overcome a complex respiratory infection and pneumonia.

In a late update, the Vatican said the episodes were caused by a “significant accumulation” of mucus in his lungs and bronchial spasms. “Two bronchoscopies were performed with the need for aspiration of copious secretions,” the Vatican said.

Francis remained alert, oriented and cooperated with medical personnel. The prognosis remained guarded.
