Israel has all but declared war in the Middle East – a conflict it cannot hope to win

Israel has all but declared war on the Middle EastFailure to halt the war in Gaza lies at the heart of the latest lethal savagery in the Middle East. The assassination in Tehran of Hamas’s political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, will be celebrated in Israel as just revenge for the 7 October atrocities. But Islamist hardliners in Iran and militant groups across the Arab world will see it as further proof of their belief that the state of Israel is a menace that must be destroyed at all costs.

And so the hatred, the violence and the misery will continue unchecked, and will in all probability worsen and spread. Just because this homicidal cycle is familiar does not mean it cannot accelerate. Few parts of the Middle East – Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Egypt, Jordan – have escaped the toxic fallout of the Gaza conflict. In Washington DC and Britain, domestic politics are roiled by the fury and the grief. The UN’s impotence is daily, humiliatingly exposed. No one is immune to this poison.

It would have been preferable if Haniyeh, in common with Hamas leaders based in Gaza, had faced trial at the international criminal court (ICC) – and been made to answer for his crimes. That now cannot happen. Instead, Israel has once again sought “justice” through extrajudicial murder. Only in April, a covert Israeli strike on Iran’s consulate in Damascus killed a top Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps general – and brought the region to the brink of all-out war. There have been numerous similar killings.

Katie Ledecky Cements Her Legacy With A 1500 Freestyle Gold At Paris Olympics

Katie Ledecky

Katie Ledecky emphatically made her case Wednesday for being the greatest woman of all time in Olympic swimming.

She easily churned to victory in the 1500-meter freestyle final at the Paris Olympics to defend her Tokyo 2021 title and tighten her hold on an event she hasn’t lost in 14 years.

Now, the world record holder has collected her first gold at the Paris Games as she continues her assault on the record books. And she did it in an Olympic record time of 15 minutes and 30.02 seconds.

France’s Anastasiia Kirpichnikova took silver, and Germany’s Isabel Gose won bronze.

Ledecky achieved several milestones with her victory: She tied the women’s swimming record of 12 Olympic medals overall, an accomplishment shared by fellow American Jenny Thompson and others. And she’ll get a chance in the 800-meter freestyle and a relay at the Games to beef up that number.

She also tied Thompson with her eighth gold medal. In addition, Ledecky stretched her own women’s Olympic swim record of six individual golds to seven.

Hamas, Iran vow 'harsh' response to killing of Ismail Haniyeh

Ismael HaniyehHamas' top political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed Wednesday in an apparent assassination at his residence in Tehran, drawing reprisal pledges from the militant group and Iran and fueling deeper concern that Israel's war in Gaza could rapidly expand across the Middle East.

Haniyeh and his bodyguard were killed after attending an inauguration ceremony for the new Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian, Hamas and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced.

Hamas and Iran immediately blamed Israel, which has pledged to take down Hamas leaders responsible for the Oct. 7 attack that left almost 1,200 people dead and about 250 taken hostage.

Speaking to the nation in Hebrew, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not address Haniyeh's death but said, according to a translation: "We are not going to be silent. We'll make everyone pay the price, everyone that murders us, anyone that takes our children.''

US to send advanced weaponry for F-16s to Ukraine, bolstering Kyiv’s military

Jets to Ukraine with modern weapons

The US will arm the fleet of F-16s headed to Ukraine from other European countries with advanced, American-made weapon systems — solving a persistent worry about where munitions for the potentially game-changing fighter jets would come from.

Denmark, Belgium, Norway and the Netherlands are slated to send about 80 of the fourth-generation fighters to the embattled country, which has for two years been desperately fighting off an invasion by Russia.

But it wasn’t clear whether the Pentagon planned to arm the planes.

“We are confident that we will be able to supply all of those [weapons], at least the critical volumes that they need,” a senior US official told the newspaper.

The Pentagon plans to send to Ukraine AGM-88 HARM air-to-ground missiles; small-diameter bombs that have a tight blast radius; and long-range versions of Joint Direct Attack Munition kits, which convert so-called “dumb” bombs into smart weapons.

Simone Biles’ narrative arc reaches full extension on glorious night for USA

Simone BilesOf course there was theatre at the very end. Two hours into this women’s Artistic Gymnastics Team final, with the USA coasting grandly at the head of the field, the logistics of competition left Simone Biles with one final act to stop the show.

Three years on from Tokyo and The Breakdown, the only discipline remaining in that same team event was the Biles floor routine. And so in front of Bill Gates, Gianni Infantino, Serena Williams and Spike Lee, in front of the eyes of the world as ever, Simone Biles got to dance like no one was watching.

Paris 2024 knew what it was getting with these gymnastics, a spectacle that would play out, as it did here, like a cross between the Super Bowl, Vegas and a Marvel movie. Mainly it was getting America: American flash, American show, American story-telling, the key event in a Games that has for many editions now been powered by US TV money and US sport tourism. Frankly, there haven’t been this many Americans in Paris since 1945.

Destruction of Gaza water wells deepens Palestinian misery

Rafah reservoir destroyed by IDF- Israel's military blew up more than 30 water wells in Gaza this month, a municipality official and residents said, adding to the trauma of airstrikes that have turned much of the Palestinian enclave into a wasteland ravaged by a humanitarian crisis.

Salama Shurab, head of the water networks at Khan Younis municipality, said the wells were destroyed by Israeli forces between July 18-27 in the southern towns of Rafah and Khan Younis.
The Israeli military did not respond to the allegations that its soldiers destroyed the wells.
It is not only ever-present danger from Israeli bombardment or ground fighting that makes life a trial for Gaza's Palestinian civilians. It is also the daily slog to find bare necessities such as water, to drink or cook or wash with.
People have dug wells in bleak areas near the sea where the bombing has pushed them, or rely on salty tap water from Gaza's only aquifer, now contaminated with seawater and sewage.
TVNL Comment:  These war criminals continue to destroy water access to Palestinians.

Israeli Court Hears Charge Soldiers Sexually Abused Palestinian At Shadowy Base

De TeimanAn Israeli military court opened an initial hearing Tuesday for nine soldiers detained over what a defense lawyer said were allegations of sexual abuse of a Palestinian at a shadowy facility where Israel has held prisoners from Gaza during the war.

The investigation has stoked tensions between the military command and hard-line nationalists in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government who advocate an even harsher hand in Israel’s conduct of the 10-month-old war in Gaza.

The probe into the incident at alleged torture center Sde Teiman has stoked tensions between military command and hard-line nationalist politicians who want more violence.

The soldiers’ detention Monday triggered angry protests by supporters demanding their release, including members of parliament and at least two government ministers. On Monday, several hundred protesters broke into the facility in southern Israel, known as Sde Teiman, and then later into the military base where the soldiers were being held. Video showed them scuffling with troops before being forced out.
