Paralympian Wins Cycling Gold Just 1 Week After Being Hit By Car
A cyclist who was “heartbroken” after a car hit him just a week before he was slated to compete in the Paralympic Games has come out on top.
Jaco van Gass won gold for the United Kingdom in the men’s 3,000-meter individual pursuit on Friday, CNN reports.
“I’m overwhelmed, delighted,” van Gass said in a statement shared on Instagram. His joy was evident in photos taken directly after his win, including one in which he excitedly tosses a small plush toy of the Paralympics mascot, the phryge, in the air.
Van Gass, who was born in South Africa, was serving in the British Armed Forces in Afghanistan in 2009 when he was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade. He was left with severe injuries, including punctured organs, and lost his left arm below the elbow.
Israeli bombardment kills dozens in Gaza as health officials prepare polio campaign
The United Nations is due to start vaccinating some 640,000 children in the territory against polio, relying on daily eight-hour pauses in fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas militants in specific areas of the besieged enclave.
Yousef Abu Al-Reesh, Gaza's deputy minister of health, said vaccination teams would try to get to as many areas as possible to ensure wide coverage but he said only a comprehensive ceasefire could guarantee enough children are reached.
Israeli strikes on Saturday killed at least 48 people in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian health authorities said, as clashes took place in central and southern areas of the enclave ahead of the planned start of a polio vaccination campaign.
Israeli strike kills at least four Palestinians leading aid convoy in Gaza
A leading U.S. charity group for humanitarian aid deliveries said Friday that one of its convoys was hit in an Israeli strike, killing four Palestinians.
Anera, a U.S. nonprofit focused on helping Palestinian refugees in the Middle East, said an Israeli strike hit the lead vehicle carrying food and fuel to the Emirati Red Crescent Hospital Thursday in Gaza.
The convoy, which departed Kerem Shalom in Israel, had been cleared for transport, the group said in a statement. But four Palestinian community members had offered to step in and drive the vehicle, expressing concerns the route was unsafe and at risk of looting.
The four members, who were killed, were not cleared by Israel, according to Anera, and the Israeli military claimed the lead car was carrying weapons.
An American researcher drowns after a Viking replica ship sinks off Norway's coast
A historic journey ended in tragedy this week when a Viking replica ship capsized off the coast of Norway, killing an American archaeologist who was part of its international crew.
The six-person team had been piloting the open wooden ship, named Naddodd, on a roughly 1,000-mile trip from the Faroe Islands to Trondheim, Norway.
"This expedition, honoring the Viking navigator Naddodd, aims to preserve Viking culture and navigational skills for future generations," Sail2North expeditions, which organized the voyage, said in an Instagram post in May.
The team — made up of four Swiss, one Faroese and one American — departed on Saturday from Suðuroy, the southernmost of the 18 Faroe Islands, for what was expected to be a several-day journey.

Palestinian Medical Workers Detail Israeli Torture Amid Dire State Of Gaza's Health System
Palestinian health care workers who were arbitrarily captured by the Israeli military are revealing the horrifying, and in some cases deadly, abuse and torture they faced at the hands of soldiers in detention ― further deteriorating Gaza’s health care system that’s already crumbling under Israel’s nearly yearlong siege.
A report published Monday by Human Rights Watch (HRW) included testimony from doctors, nurses and paramedics who said they faced humiliation, beatings, forced stress positions, prolonged cuffing, blindfolding and denial of medical care while in Israeli custody. These specific health care workers, now released, also described torture that included rape and sexual abuse by Israeli forces, and inhumane living conditions for the general prison population. Their testimonies are consistent with other credible reports about Israel’s inhumane treatment of detainees.
“The Israeli government’s mistreatment of Palestinian health care workers has continued in the shadows and needs to immediately stop,” Balkees Jarrah, HRW’s acting Middle East director, said in a statement earlier this week. “The torture and other ill-treatment of doctors, nurses and paramedics should be thoroughly investigated and appropriately punished, including by the International Criminal Court (ICC).”
