Some Hamas officials are signaling that the militant group could give up armed struggle against Israel if the Palestinians get an independent state in territories captured by Israel in the 1967 war.

The messaging suggests a softening of Hamas’ position as its fate hangs in the balance with Israel’s pummeling of the Gaza Strip, which Hamas ruled before the war. The Palestinian militant group has long called for the Jewish state to be destroyed.

Basem Naim, an Istanbul-based member of Hamas’ political bureau, told CNN on Thursday that the group would agree to disarm if an independent Palestinian state was established.

Two recent virtual meetings between U.S. and Israeli officials had a lot of "back and forth" on how to proceed in Rafah, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Friday.

"We've expressed our concerns with a major ground invasion in Rafah. We've been very clear about that," Jean-Pierre said, adding that the U.S. has presented "an alternative course for Israel to dismantle Hamas."

"We believe Israel will take our concerns on board. They will take into account our consideration as they plan their their next operations," she said.

Colombia is set to break diplomatic relations with Israel over its actions in Gaza.

Speaking to a crowd in the capital Bogotá on Wednesday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that the country "will break diplomatic relations with the state of Israel" on Thursday, calling its government "genocidal."

"If Palestine dies, humanity dies, and we are not going to let it die," he said.

Israel has strongly denied committing genocide in its war against Hamas in Gaza.

"History will remember that Gustavo Petro decided to side with the most despicable monsters known to mankind," Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
