Sen. Chris Van Hollen meets with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man wrongly deported to El Salvador

Garcia and Van Hollen

Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen said he has met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man wrongly deported to El Salvador last month.

Van Hollen, who traveled to the Central American country earlier in the week, wrote in an April 17 message on X, “I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance."

"I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love," he said. "I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.”

Moments before the lawmaker posted a message and image, Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele posted three additional photos from the meeting. He quipped that the two were sharing a margarita together.

"Now that he’s been confirmed healthy, he gets the honor of staying in El Salvador’s custody," Bukele said.

Israeli defense minister says troops will remain in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria indefinitely

Katz: Israel to stay in 4 countries

Israel’s defense minister said on Wednesday that troops will remain in so-called security zones in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Syria indefinitely, remarks that could further complicate talks with Hamas over a ceasefire and hostage release.

Meanwhile, Israeli strikes across Gaza killed another 22 people, according to local health officials, including a girl who was not yet a year old. The girl’s mother, who was wounded, embraced her daughter, still wearing a bloodied blue dress, before she was taken for burial.

Israeli forces have taken over more than half of Gaza in a renewed campaign to pressure Hamas militants to release hostages after Israel ended their ceasefire last month. Israel has also refused to withdraw from some areas in Lebanon following a ceasefire with the Hezbollah militant group last year, and it seized a buffer zone in southern Syria after rebels overthrew Syrian President Bashar Assad in December.

TVNL Comment: Israel cannot carry out these audacious acts without unending funding by the United States. Trump, like Biden, does whatever Netanyahu wants.   How long till Americans refuse to finance this disaster?

Ukraine war briefing: Nato chief visits Odesa, declares ‘unwavering’ support for Kyiv

NATO chief declares support
  • Nato secretary general Mark Rutte has visited the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and declared “unwavering” support for Ukraine in the aftermath of a Russian attack on the northern city of Sumy that killed 35 people.

Rutte said the military alliance was still strongly behind Kyiv, even as it also supported the ceasefire push by US president Donald Trump, who has issued fresh criticism of Zelenskyy, accusing him of starting the war. “Nato stands with Ukraine,” Rutte said at a press conference with Zelenskyy on Tuesday. “You and I know that this has been true all along. I also know that some have called Nato’s support into question in the last couple of months. But let there be no doubt: our support is unwavering.”

Rutte also said: “Russia is the aggressor, Russia started this war. There’s no doubt.” Zelenskyy said the main focus of the talks was strengthening Ukraine’s air defence. “Absolutely everyone sees how urgent Ukraine’s need is for air defence systems and missiles for them,” he posted on X.

  • 5 takeaways about NPR's reporting on the whistleblower report about DOGE at the NLRB

    Doge lawlessness

When a team of advisers from President Trump's Department of Government Efficiency initiative arrived at the headquarters of the National Labor Relations Board, IT employees at the small, independent agency quickly became worried, according to a whistleblower declaration filed with Congress and shared with NPR.

The NLRB investigates and adjudicates complaints about unfair labor practices. Its databases store reams of potentially sensitive data, from confidential information about employees who want to form unions to proprietary business information.

The DOGE employees, who are effectively led by White House adviser and billionaire tech CEO Elon Musk, appeared to set their sights on accessing the NLRB's internal systems, removing sensitive data and covering their tracks.

"I can't attest to what their end goal was or what they're doing with the data," said the whistleblower, Daniel Berulis, in an interview with NPR. "But I can tell you that the bits of the puzzle that I can quantify are scary. ... This is a very bad picture we're looking at."

Gaza ‘not a place you want to be sick’ as Israel destroys health system

Gaza health system destroyedA Palestinian man in Gaza has described losing his aunt to cancer when she was denied treatment because Israel had bombed the only hospitals able to treat her illness in the territory.

Speaking to Al Jazeera earlier, Ahmad Al Najjar described the “apocalyptic conditions” created by the ongoing Israeli bombing campaign, which has included the systematic demolition of Gaza’s health system by the Israeli military.

Gaza is “not a place that you want to be sick”, said Al Najjar, explaining how the destruction of the Strip has traumatised thousands of people and stopped those with injuries and preventable illnesses in Israeli attacks from receiving treatment.

“Just by witnessing what we are experiencing in the Gaza Strip is perfectly sufficiently to wipe out the sanity of an human being,” he said.

Zelenskyy jabs JD Vance for ‘justifying’ Russia’s war on Ukraine

    Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused U.S. Vice President JD Vance of “somehow justifying” Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, his most critical comments about the top American politician since their heated Oval Office exchange in February.

Speaking to American news program 60 Minutes, Zelenskyy said some officials in the U.S. government were falling victim to Russian disinformation and pushing an “altered reality” about which side started the war.

“I believe, sadly, Russian narratives are prevailing in the U.S.,” he said, according to a translation of his remarks by CBS. “This speaks to the enormous influence of Russia’s information policy on America, on U.S. politics and U.S. politicians.”
