Ukraine war briefing: Trump plan to end war must include security guarantees, Zelenskyy says

Zelemsky wants security guarantees
  • Donald Trump’s plan for a quick settlement in Ukraine must not only stop the war but also ensure that there can no longer be any more Russian aggression, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said in an interview broadcast on Sunday. Zelenskyy said Ukraine wanted no repeat of the experience of peace accords and talks that failed to produce results in the years running up to Moscow’s February 2022 full-scale invasion. And that, he said, meant putting security guarantees in place.

“A frozen conflict will lead to more aggression again and again. Who then will win prizes and go down in history as the victor? No one. It will be an absolute defeat for everyone, both for us, as is important, and for Trump,” Zelenskyy told Britain’s ITV. “If I had an understanding that America and Europe will not abandon us and they will support us and provide security guarantees, I would be ready for any format for talks,” he said.

  • The comments were broadcast as Trump indicated that he had been in contact with Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, and that progress was being made in its talks to end the war; that would mark the first officially acknowledged conversation between Putin and a US president since early 2022.

  • Egypt to host Gaza summit as Israel withdraws troops from Netzarim Corridor

Egypt to host Gaza summitEgypt announced Sunday it would host a summit of Arab leaders later in the month, amid alarm in the region over President Trump's proposals regarding the future of Gaza.

A statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry says the summit is being called in response to a Palestinian request.

It said the leaders will gather on Feb. 27 to discuss "the new and dangerous developments in the Palestinian issue."

Also Sunday, Israeli forces began withdrawing from the Netzarim corridor in Gaza, in the latest stage of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.

The Netzarim corridor is a four mile strip of land bisecting northern and southern Gaza that Israel fortified during the war, using it as a military zone. Last month, as part of the ceasefire deal, Israel started allowing Palestinians to cross the Netzarim corridor and return to their homes in the North.

Trump says he’s in ‘no rush’ to develop Gaza

Gaza rubblePresident Trump on Sunday said that he is not rushed to develop Gaza, arguing that building there will bring Middle East stability after he announced a plan for an American takeover of the war-torn region.

“Think of it as a big real estate site, and the United States is going to own it, and will slowly, very slowly, we’re in no rush, in development. We’re going to bring stability to the Middle East,” Trump told reporters.

The president’s controversial proposal stands to upend decades of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and leaders of regional Arab nations and even some of Trump’s Republican allies appeared lukewarm to it.

Palestinian prisoners released by Israel after Hamas frees hostages

    Prisoner exchange

Israel and Hamas have completed the fifth exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners as agreed under stage one of the ceasefire process.

The three Israelis - Eli Sharabi, Ohad Ben Ami and Or Levy - were released first, but Hamas' choreography of the release has drawn criticism.

Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu said the country "would not gloss over the shocking scenes", referring to the pictures of their release broadcast around the world.

In front of a large crowd in Deir al-Balah in the Gaza Strip, the three men were taken one at a time to a small stage and made to speak to the crowd and Hamas media before being handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Trump reveals he’s spoken with Putin by phone, says Russian president ‘wants to see people stop dying’ in Ukraine war

PutinPresident Trump has spoken to Russian leader Vladimir Putin on the phone to try to negotiate an end to the Ukraine war, he told The Post in an exclusive interview aboard Air Force One Friday.

“I’d better not say,” said Trump when asked how many times the two leaders have spoken.

But he believes Putin “does care” about the killing on the battlefield.“He wants to see people stop dying,” said Trump.

“All those dead people. Young, young, beautiful people. They’re like your kids, two million of them – and for no reason.”

The three-year-old war “never would have happened” if he had been president in 2022, Trump asserted.

“I always had a good relationship with Putin,” he said, unlike his predecessor.

Trump Says Some White South Africans Are Oppressed, Could Be Resettled In The U.S. — They Say 'No Thanks'

Afrikaner say no to TrumpGroups representing some of South Africa’s white minority responded Saturday to a plan by President Donald Trump to offer them refugee status and resettlement in the United States by saying: thanks, but no thanks.

The plan was detailed in an executive order Trump signed Friday that stopped all aid and financial assistance to South Africa as punishment for what the Trump administration said were “rights violations” by the government against some of its white citizens.

The Trump administration accused the South African government of allowing violent attacks on white Afrikaner farmers and introducing a land expropriation law that enables it to “seize ethnic minority Afrikaners’ agricultural property without compensation.”

The South African government has denied there are any concerted attacks on white farmers and has said that Trump’s description of the new land law is full of misinformation and distortions.

Zelensky says North Korean troops back on front line

ukraine says N Korean troops back on front line

Ukraine's president says North Korean forces have returned to the front line in Russia's western Kursk region, after reports they were withdrawn last month due to heavy casualties.

In a video address on Friday, Volodymyr Zelensky said the Russian army had "brought back in North Korean soldiers" who were carrying out "new assaults" in the region partially occupied by Ukraine.

He added "hundreds of Russian and North Korean military" personnel had been "destroyed".

In January, Western officials told the BBC they believed at least 1,000 of the 11,000 troops sent from North Korea had been killed in the past three months. North Korea and Russia have not commented.
