Why is maternal mortality so high in the U.S.?
The U.S. is one of 23 countries where maternal mortality is on the rise, though that may change once the new health care law, the Affordable Care Act, comes into effect. New York City and California provide a glimpse into why the rates may be so high.
The future of pregnant women in the United States is on the threshold of dramatic change. Aug. 1 marks the day insurance providers and Medicaid will be required to cover preventative care for women.
Study: Radiation Therapy Can Make Cancers 30x More Malignant
Following on the heels of recent revelations that x-ray mammography may be contributing to an epidemic of future radiation-induced breast cancers, in a new article titled, "Radiation Treatment Generates Therapy Resistant Cancer Stem Cells From Aggressive Breast Cancer Cells," published in the journal Cancer July 1st, 2012, researchers from the Department of Radiation Oncology at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center report that radiation treatment actually drives breast cancer cells into greater malignancy.
Pharmaceutical Drugs are 62,000 Times More Likely to Kill You than Supplements
The UK-based, international campaign group, the Alliance for Natural Health International (ANH-Intl) recently revealed data1 showing that compared to supplements, an individual is:
- Around 900 times more likely to die from food poisoning
- Nearly 300,000 times more likely to die from a preventable medical injury during a UK hospital stay, which is comparable to the individual risk of dying that active military face in Iraq or Afghanistan

Legal for Some, Pot Crops Up in N.J.
For the first time in generations, marijuana is legally growing in New Jersey. In a sign that the Garden State's budding medical marijuana program is finally moving forward, the first crop has been growing hydroponically for about a month in a 5,000-square-foot warehouse in an undisclosed location, officials said.
The first plants are about a foot high, said Joseph Stevens, president of the Greenleaf Compassion Center, the first licensed provider of medical pot. By mid-September, the center's Montclair dispensary should be open and accepting patients to buy marijuana, he said.
Vaccines combine to produce deadly virus
Vaccines aren't supposed to cause disease. But that appears to be what's happening on Australian farms.
Scientists have found that two virus strains used to vaccinate chickens there may have recombined to form a virus that is sickening and killing the animals.
But when the researchers sequenced the genomes of the two new strains and the three vaccine strains, they found that the new viruses were actually stitched together from the European and Australian vaccines. Although it was not clear what mutations kept the vaccine strains from causing disease in the first place, they were probably lost when the viruses recombined, said Browning, whose team reports its findings online in Science.
