Exposed documents reveal Napolitano, TSA lied about safety of cancer-causing naked body scanners

Remember when Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano claimed back in 2010 that the US Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) naked body scanners had been proven safe by research conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) (http://epic.org/privacy/backscatter...)? A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request recently brought to light internal emails that were sent by NIST to DHS that basically decry Napolitano's false assertion that NIST had verified the safety of the naked body scanners.

NRC and industry rewrite nuke history

NRC, nuclear industry rewrite historyWhen commercial nuclear power was getting its start in the 1960s and 1970s, industry and regulators stated unequivocally that reactors were designed only to operate for 40 years. Now they tell another story - insisting that the units were built with no inherent life span, and can run for up to a century, an Associated Press investigation shows.

By rewriting history, plant owners are making it easier to extend the lives of dozens of reactors in a relicensing process that resembles nothing more than an elaborate rubber stamp.

KKR to Buy Top ISP Domain Reg. “Go Daddy”- But who is KKR?

If you haven’t heard much about KKR (Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts and Co) its probably not your fault. Like many Pac Man style private equity groups gobbling up vast proportions of businesses in every sector… They tend to be “publicity shy”, and like to operate in the dark of night, with a cloak of anonymity.

In other words, since they and other P.E.’s  own much of the media designed to inform us of these matters,  its not hard to keep things on the QT.

Supreme Court Kills Off AZ Public Financing Law

Supreme Court kills of public campaign financing in AZScore another one for James Bopp, the veteran conservative lawyer who has helped kill off much of the country's campaign finance regulatory system. On Monday, the US Supreme Court struck down an innovative Arizona public financing law that would have provided extra public money to candidates who were being outspent by privately funded candidates and independent expenditure groups.

The drafters of the law had hoped that by using public funds to generate more speech, not less, they might be able to avoid many of the free speech issues that have bedeviled other attempts to level the campaign playing field.

Netanyahu rescinds decision to sanction journalists on board Gaza flotilla

Netanyahu rescinds order against journalistsAfter a day in which every single news media outlet in the world seemed to weigh in, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday rescinded a Government Press Office decision to sanction any foreign journalist who participates in the Gaza Strip flotilla.

GPO director Oren Helman had announced on Sunday that any foreign journalist on the flotilla would be treated as an illegal infiltrator, meaning they would be deported and then barred from entering Israel for 10 years. But yesterday Netanyahu's bureau issued a press release rescinding that decision.

Warming oceans cause largest movement of marine species in two million years

Warming oceans cause largest movement of marine species in two million yearsWarming ocean waters are causing the largest movement of marine species seen on Earth in more than two million years, according to scientists. In the Arctic, melting sea ice during recent summers has allowed a passage to open up from the Pacific ocean into the North Atlantic, allowing plankton, fish and even whales to into the Atlantic Ocean from the Pacific.

The discovery has sparked fears delicate marine food webs could be unbalanced and lead to some species becoming extinct as competition for food between the native species and the invaders stretches resources.

Cost of air conditioning for U.S. troops in MidEast more than NASA budget

The United States spends $20.2 billion annually on air conditioning for troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan — more than NASA's entire budget, NPR reported.

In fact, the same amount of money that keeps soldiers cool is the amount the G-8 has committed to helping the fledgling democracies in Tunisia and Egypt.

We've already had complaints against TSA agents of toddlers getting patted down, a woman's breasts being exposed and groping.

Now a 95-year-old woman in the final stages of a battle with leukaemia has been allegedly detained and humiliatingly searched at a Florida airport - and the TSA is defending their actions.

Jean Weber, of Destin, Florida, claims her mother in a wheelchair was asked to remove an adult diaper in order to complete a pat-down search.

Michele Bachmann benefited personally from federal funds and federal farm subsidies

Michele BachmannRep. Michele Bachmann has been propelled into the 2012 presidential contest in part by her insistent calls to reduce federal spending, a pitch in tune with the big-government antipathy gripping many conservatives.

But the Minnesota Republican and her family have benefited personally from government aid, an examination of her record and finances shows. A counseling clinic run by her husband has received nearly $30,000 from the state of Minnesota in the last five years, money that in part came from the federal government. A family farm in Wisconsin, in which the congresswoman is a partner, received nearly $260,000 in federal farm subsidies.
