New York City newspaper refers to President Obama as 'N*****' in headline

Racial slur in NY paperA local New York City newspaper is putting itself on the map in a big way thanks an op-ed by author James Lincoln Collier with the title "The [Expletive] in the White House."

In the headline, the WestView News of NYC's West Village used the racial slur to refer to President Barack Obama.

Underneath Collier's piece, which actually argued that "far right voters hate Obama because he is black," the paper ran another op-ed written by African-American columnist Alvin Hall called, "The Headline Offends Me."

The Giant Methane Monster That Can Wipe Out the Human Race

Methane monsterThere's something lurking deep under the frozen Arctic Ocean, and if it gets released, it could spell disaster for our planet.  That something is methane.

Methane is one of the strongest of the natural greenhouse gases, about 80 times more potent than CO2, and while it may not get as much attention as its cousin CO2, it certainly can do as much, if not more, damage to our planet.

That's because methane is a far more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, and there are trillions of tons of it embedded in a kind of ice slurry called methane hydrate or methane clathrate crystals in the Arctic and in the seas around the continental shelves all around the world.

Mo. governor vetoes three-day abortion waiting period

Jay NixonMissouri Gov. Jay Nixon, a Democrat, vetoed legislation Wednesday that would have required a 72-hour wait for women seeking abortions, asserting that legislators showed a "callous disregard for women" by granting no exception for rape and incest victims.

Republican legislators quickly vowed to override the governor's decision, and they may have the numbers to do so. The GOP-led legislature approved the plan earlier this year only one vote shy of the supermajority needed to undo a veto.

Hobby Lobby verdict overlooks the science on pregnancy, experts say

Plan BA Supreme Court ruling in favor of allowing companies to opt out of providing female employees some forms of birth control — such as the morning-after pill and certain IUDs — has allowed religious employers to “redefine” pregnancy in a way that flies in the face of the established science of conception, reproductive health experts say.

The company that brought the suit, Hobby Lobby, argued that using these types of contraceptives is tantamount to having an abortion, and, citing religious beliefs against terminations, wanted to opt out of the provision of the Affordable Care Act that requires companies to cover preventive services like contraceptives.
