One of Darwin's evolution theories finally proved by Cambridge researcher

Darwon's theory on the origin of speciesLaura van Holstein, a PhD student in Biological Anthropology at St John's College, University of Cambridge, and lead author of the research published today (March 18) in Proceedings of the Royal Society, discovered mammal subspecies play a more important role in evolution than previously thought.

Her research could now be used to predict which species conservationists should focus on protecting to stop them becoming endangered or extinct.

A species is a group of animals that can interbreed freely amongst themselves. Some species contain subspecies -- populations within a species that differ from each other by having different physical traits and their own breeding ranges. Northern giraffes have three subspecies that usually live in different locations to each other and red foxes have the most subspecies -- 45 known varieties -- spread all over the world. Humans have no subspecies.

Dow tumbles again, nearly wiping out gains of Trump’s presidency

Stocks wipe out all gains in Trump eraThe Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 6 percent on Wednesday under the 20,000 level, nearly erasing the iconic index's previous gains since President Donald Trump's inauguration and jeopardizing a key talking point for his reelection campaign.

Earlier in the day, the S&P 500 dropped so steeply that it triggered a market-wide suspension of trading for 15 minutes.

The plunge underscores the risk Trump took in tying his presidential reputation to stock prices, which can fall as easily as they rise, and in any case are only one indicator of the health of the economy.

Police officer and gunman among five dead after shooting in Springfield, Missouri

Police officer and gunman among 5 dead in Missouri

Five people including a police officer and a gunman died at a Missouri gas station after the gunman went inside and opened fire, police said on Monday.

Three citizens were also killed, Springfield police chief Paul Williams announced. One officer was injured, and another citizen.

Williams said police received reports of “multiple shooting calls throughout the city” late on Sunday. As officers were responding, witnesses reported that a vehicle crashed into a Kum & Go gas station and convenience store and the gunman ran inside and began shooting customers and employees, Williams added.

The first two officers who arrived were shot. Other officers pulled the injured officers from the store then went inside, finding three citizens dead. The gunman was also dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot, Williams said.

Coronavirus travel fallout: American, Delta cutting global and domestic flights as demand sinks

Airlines make cutsThe stinging travel fallout from the coronavirus outbreak continues.

American Airlines early Tuesday announced sweeping flight cutbacks due a steep drop in travel demand. And unlike the significant cuts announced by United last week, they extend into the peak summer travel season.

Airlines started cutting flights to China in late January and have had to take a series of even more aggressive cuts since then as the virus spread around the globe and travelers grew anxious about flying.

American said it is reducing international seat capacity by 10% this summer, including a 55% reduction in flights across the Pacific.

64-year-old becomes oldest woman to row across Atlantic Ocean

Sarah Brewer, oldest to row across Atlantic

A 64-year-old who only took up rowing six years ago has become the oldest woman to row an ocean after crossing the Atlantic in 86 days. Sara Brewer achieved the feat alongside her rowing partner, Ann Prestidge, 35.

The pair completed the Talisker Whisky Atlantic challenge on just two meals a day after running out of food. The race took them more than a fortnight longer than they had anticipated after they battled 20-metre (65ft) high waves, fought through numerous storms, suffered broken oars and injuries.

The pair set off from La Gomera, the Canary Islands, on 12 December last year, rowing 3,000 miles (4,828km) to reach the shores of Antigua on 7 March – just in time for International Women’s Day.

Nationalist Governments Are Trying To Rewrite Holocaust History — By Targeting Museums

Nationalist governments are trying to change Holocaust history

Dariusz Stola was, until recently, the acclaimed director of the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw. A prominent historian who had run the museum since 2014, Stola used to give lectures telling politicians to pay attention to history — but he didn’t mean like this.

Stola was forced to step aside last month after a standoff with Poland’s right-wing nationalist government after the museum highlighted anti-Semitism in Poland’s history — a complex issue that the government is intent on simplifying. The ruling Law and Justice party is especially sensitive to history involving World War II and the Holocaust, maintaining that Poland receives unfair blame for Nazi atrocities.

And a tainted cruise ship will finally dock in California sometime Monday with at least 21 infected people.

The coronavirus showed no signs of slowing its spread across the United States as confirmed cases surpassed 560 across 34 states and the District of Columbia.  The U.S. death toll rose to 22, while the worldwide total approached 4,000.

Iowa was among the latest states to report an encounter with the coronavirus as Gov. Kim Reynolds announced three presumptive positive cases. All three people were on a cruise through Egypt and are now isolated at home, Reynolds told reporters.

Ex-UAW president Gary Jones charged in corruption probe

Gary JonesFederal prosecutors have charged Gary Jones, the former head of the UAW, in the corruption probe.

The charges, which accuse Jones, among other things, of conspiring to embezzle union funds and aiding racketeering activity, were unsealed Thursday. They were filed as an information in U.S. District Court in Detroit, meaning Jones is expected to plead guilty.

Jones resigned in disgrace last year after he was implicated in federal court papers which said he was one of several top union officials who had embezzled more than a million dollars and spent it on meals, cigars and other lavish goodies.
