Europe launches 'Green Deal' as Thunberg denounces climate inaction

Green deal EuropeEurope sought to bolster the world’s faltering battle against climate change on Wednesday with its “Green Deal” to slash fossil fuel dependence, while teen activist Greta Thunberg rebuked global leaders for dragging their feet.

With fires, floods and droughts ruining millions of lives around the world, the European Union’s new executive cast the plan as the bloc’s “man on the moon moment,” kindling hopes among campaigners that other big emitters may follow suit.

The 2 articles of impeachment against President Trump explained – and what happens next

Trump articles of impeachmentThe House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday unveiled two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.

The articles – abuse of power and obstruction of Congress – are charges of wrongdoing that lay out specific assertions of how the president violated the U.S. Constitution and the oath of his office.

Each of the articles will be voted on separately by the Judiciary Committee later this week, possibly Thursday. Those the panel approves will go to the full House for a vote, probably with a simple majority in the Democratic-controlled body on each article.

Supreme Court halts subpoena to Deutsche Bank for Trump records

Deutsche bank

The Supreme Court on Friday granted President Trump's emergency request to temporarily block a congressional subpoena for his financial records from Deutsche Bank.

The court's order came just hours after the president's legal team asked for a temporary stay of an appellate court decision ordering Deutsche Bank to comply with subpoenas from the House Financial Services and Intelligence Committees for a broad range of documents concerning Trump's finances and his businesses.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who oversees the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, issued an administrative stay of that court's decision that will be in effect until Dec. 13 while the court deliberates on whether to grant a longer stay and to give Trump's lawyers time to prepare a formal appeal.

Thomas Friedman: Mike Pompeo: Last in His Class at West Point in Integrity

Mike Pompeo: A national disgracce

It seems like every story you read about Secretary of State Mike Pompeo always includes the sentence that he graduated “first in his class” from West Point. That is not a small achievement. But it is even more impressive in Pompeo’s case when you consider that he finished No. 1 even though he must have flunked all his courses on ethics and leadership. I guess he was really good in math.

I say that because Pompeo has just violated one of the cardinal rules of American military ethics and command: You look out for your soldiers, you don’t leave your wounded on the battlefield and you certainly don’t stand mute when you know a junior officer is being railroaded by a more senior commander, if not outright shot in her back.

The classes on ethics and leadership at West Point would have taught all of that. I can only assume Pompeo failed or skipped them all when you observe his cowardly, slimy behavior as the leader of the State Department. I would never, ever, ever want to be in a trench with that man. Attention all U.S. diplomats: Watch your own backs, because Pompeo won’t.

Lobbyist says he wasn't lobbying when he tried to oust Ukrainian ambassador. Experts disagree.

Robert LivingstonAn allegation that Bob Livingston, a congressman-turned-lobbyist, sought to oust the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine raises questions about whether he violated a federal law that requires lobbyists to disclose their work for foreign clients.

Livingston, a former high-ranking House member who heads an influential Washington lobbying firm, repeatedly called Foreign Service Officer Catherine Croft and pressed for the ouster of the ambassador, Marie Yovanovitch, Croft told impeachment investigators last week.

In Croft's written statement, she said Livingston told her that Yovanovitch – now a key figure in impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump – was an “Obama holdover” associated with George Soros, the billionaire investor, philanthropist, Democratic donor, and Trump critic.

Washington Nationals closer Sean Doolittle declines White House invite: 'I just can't go'

Sean Doolittle refuses WH invitation

Washington Nationals closer Sean Doolittle will not attend the White House for a World Series celebration on Monday, he told the Washington Post.

Doolittle became the first Nats player to publicly decline president Donald Trump's invitation, telling the Post "There’s a lot of things, policies that I disagree with, but at the end of the day, it has more to do with the divisive rhetoric and the enabling of conspiracy theories and widening the divide in this country."

Doolittle has never been shy of his liberal beliefs, which first hit the spotlight in the summer of 2017, when he was traded to Washington and Trump was in his first year of office. Though it was always possible, a decision over a White House visit became inevitable when the Nationals won the World Series this week.

'We're all living the dream': Inside the Nationals' astonishing World Series run

Nationals win World Series for first time in their franchiseIn a corridor next to the celebration that nobody wanted to end, the man who started the game that won the Washington Nationals a World Series wrapped his arm around the man who finished it. Max Scherzer is one of the greatest pitchers of this generation, a tightly wound perfectionist whose eyes flit with nervous energy. Daniel Hudson is a journeyman relief pitcher who was jobless in March and somehow found himself here, in the middle of history

.Black swimming goggles covered Scherzer's eyes. When he removed them, there were tears, not from the burning of champagne sprays but the emotion bombarding his amygdala. It happened. It really happened. Three days earlier, Scherzer was supposed to start Game 5, only for his neck to lock up so badly he couldn't turn his head. Two days earlier, he prayed a cortisone shot and chiropractic treatment would offer some kind of relief. A day earlier, he watched the Nationals save their season and gift him an opportunity at redemption. And on Wednesday, he stood on the mound in Game 7 against the Houston Astros facing the cruelest of binaries: win a championship or lose everything.

Chile cancels climate and Apec summits amid mass protests

Sebastian Pinera cancels Apec summit amid protests

Chile has pulled out of hosting two major international summits, including a UN climate change conference, as anti-government protests continue.

President Sebastián Piñera said the decision "caused him a lot of pain" but his government needed "to prioritise re-establishing public order".

The COP25 climate summit was scheduled for December, while the Apec trade summit was due next month.

The UN said it was now "exploring alternative hosting options".

Chile's decision comes amid global climate protests, including a week of strikes led by environmental activist Greta Thunberg last month.

State Department official testifies as part of impeachment inquiry

Philip ReekerPhilip Reeker, the acting assistant secretary of European and Eurasian affairs, is testifying before the House committees conducting the impeachment inquiry in a closed deposition on Saturday. Reeker is the latest in a line of current and former administration officials testifying about their knowledge of a July 25 call where President Trump asked the Ukrainian president to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.

An official working on the impeachment inquiry told CBS News that Reeker received a subpoena to appear.

"In light of an attempt by the State Department to direct Ambassador Philip Reeker not to appear for his scheduled deposition, and efforts by the State Department to also limit any testimony that does occur, the House Intelligence Committee issued a subpoena to compel his testimony. As is required of him, Ambassador Reeker is now complying with the subpoena and answering questions," the official said.
