In a reversal of Pentagon policy, the military for the first time is notifying the International Committee of the Red Cross of the identities of militants who were being held in secret at a camp in Iraq and another in Afghanistan run by United States Special Operations forces, according to three military officials.
The change begins to lift the veil from the American government’s most secretive remaining overseas prisons by allowing the Red Cross to track the custody of dozens of the most dangerous suspected terrorists and foreign fighters plucked off the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan.

U.S. Jews threaten to boycott Israeli university in wake of academic's op-ed
Members of the Los Angeles Jewish community have threatened to withhold donations to an Israeli university in protest of an op-ed published by a prominent Israeli academic in the Los Angeles Times on Friday, in which he called to boycott Israel economically, culturally and politically.
Dr Neve Gordon of Ben-Gurion University in Be'er Sheva, a veteran peace activist, branded Israel as an Apartheid state and said that a boycott was "the only way to save it from itself."
U.S. Still Using Security Firm It Broke With
Despite publicly breaking with an American private security company in Iraq, the State Department continues to award the company, formerly known as Blackwater, more than $400 million in contracts to fly its diplomats around Iraq, guard them in Afghanistan, and train security forces in antiterrorism tactics at its remote camp in North Carolina.
Nadler: Obama Violating Law By Not Investigating Bush
"If they follow the law they have no choice," Nadler said in an interview this past weekend.
Nadler said that a special prosecutor should handle the task, because some of the likely subjects of such an investigation worked in the Justice Department. "There is an inherent conflict interest," said Nadler," which is why you must appoint a special prosecutor. But, again, you have no choice because that's the law."
TVNL Comment: As has been the case for years, "investigations", regarless of what crimes they uncover, do not lead to procedution. They serve as a tool to shut the people up as to say "see, we are addressing the issue."

Mercury Found in Every Fish Tested, Scientists Say
When government scientists went looking for mercury contamination in fish in 291 streams around the nation, they found it in every fish they tested, the Interior Department said, even in isolated rural waterways.
Emissions from coal-fired power plants are the largest source of mercury contamination in the United States. A quarter of the fish studied had mercury levels above safety levels set by the Environmental Protection Agency for people who eat the fish regularly.
Report Reveals CIA Conducted Mock Executions
A long-suppressed report by the Central Intelligence Agency's inspector general to be released next week reveals that CIA interrogators staged mock executions as part of the agency's post-9/11 program to detain and question terror suspects, NEWSWEEK has learned.
According to two sources—one who has read a draft of the paper and one who was briefed on it—the report describes how one detainee, suspected USS Cole bomber Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, was threatened with a gun and a power drill during the course of CIA interrogation.
State jobless rate at all-time worst
California led the nation in job losses in July, while a third of the nation showed decreases in unemployment for the month. California lost 35,800 jobs, the U.S. Labor Department said Friday, to boost its unemployment rate to 11.9 percent, a mark unequalled since modern labor record-keeping began.
The new numbers bring California's total job losses to 760,200 over the last year. If there is good news, it is that the rate of job losses slowed for a second straight month. July's job losses were barely half those in May.
