Women's soccer suit for equal pay thrown out of court

After a federal judge in California on Friday threw out the U.S. women's national soccer team's claim of unequal pay compared to the men's team, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden tweeted his support of the women.

"Don't give up this fight," read a tweet posted on Biden's official account on Saturday. "This is not over yet."

The former vice president also called out U.S. Soccer and laid out in plain terms what the consequences would be if the organization did not pony up for equal pay.

"Equal pay, now," Biden tweeted. "Or else when I'm president, you can go elsewhere for World Cup funding."

Ananiti-malaria drug touted by President Trump as a

"game changer" for COVID-19 showed no benefit, according to an analysis of patients hospitalized in Veterans Health Administration medical centers.

The analysis found the two primary outcomes for people treated with hydroxychloroquine were death and the need for mechanical ventilation.

The analysis was conducted retrospectively, based on data from patients hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 infections in all VA medical centers until April 11, 2020.

Landmark skull fossil provides surprising human evolution clues

Landmark skull fossil Scientists have solved a longstanding mystery over the age of a landmark skull found in 1921 in Zambia - the first fossil of an extinct human species discovered in Africa - in research with big implications for deciphering the origin of our own species.

The study published on Wednesday involved the so-called Broken Hill skull, also called the Kabwe skull in recognition of a nearby town, discovered by a Swiss miner working in the Broken Hill lead and zinc mine in what was then Northern Rhodesia. Until now, scientists had been in the dark about how old it was, making it difficult to know its place on the human family tree.

But two sophisticated dating methods have determined the skull to be about 299,000 years old, plus or minus 25,000 years, said geochronologist Rainer Grün of Griffith University in Australia, lead author of the study published in the journal Nature. Some experts had hypothesized it was 500,000 years old.

Sarah Brewer, oldest to row across Atlantic

A 64-year-old who only took up rowing six years ago has become the oldest woman to row an ocean after crossing the Atlantic in 86 days. Sara Brewer achieved the feat alongside her rowing partner, Ann Prestidge, 35.

The pair completed the Talisker Whisky Atlantic challenge on just two meals a day after running out of food. The race took them more than a fortnight longer than they had anticipated after they battled 20-metre (65ft) high waves, fought through numerous storms, suffered broken oars and injuries.

The pair set off from La Gomera, the Canary Islands, on 12 December last year, rowing 3,000 miles (4,828km) to reach the shores of Antigua on 7 March – just in time for International Women’s Day.

And a tainted cruise ship will finally dock in California sometime Monday with at least 21 infected people.

The coronavirus showed no signs of slowing its spread across the United States as confirmed cases surpassed 560 across 34 states and the District of Columbia. The U.S. death toll rose to 22, while the worldwide total approached 4,000.

Iowa was among the latest states to report an encounter with the coronavirus as Gov. Kim Reynolds announced three presumptive positive cases. All three people were on a cruise through Egypt and are now isolated at home, Reynolds told reporters.

AG Barr suggests he might resign over tweets

Attorney General William P. Barr has told people close to President Trump — both inside and outside the White House — that he is considering quitting over Trump’s tweets about Justice Department investigations, three administration officials said, foreshadowing a possible confrontation between the president and his attorney general over the independence of the Justice Department.

So far, Trump has defied Barr’s requests, both public and private, to keep quiet on matters of federal law enforcement. It was not immediately clear Tuesday whether Barr had made his posture known directly to Trump. The administration officials said Barr seemed to be sharing his position with advisers in hopes the president would get the message that he should stop weighing in publicly on the Justice Department’s ongoing criminal investigations.

Michael Flynn case ordered probed by AG Barr

Attorney General William P. Barr has assigned an outside prosecutor to scrutinize the criminal case against President Trump’s former national security adviser Michael T. Flynn, according to people familiar with the matter.

The review is highly unusual and could trigger more accusations of political interference by top Justice Department officials into the work of career prosecutors.

Mr. Barr has also installed a handful of outside prosecutors to broadly review the handling of other politically sensitive national-security cases in the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington, the people said. The team includes at least one prosecutor from the office of the United States attorney in St. Louis, Jeff Jensen, who is handling the Flynn matter, as well as prosecutors from the office of the deputy attorney general, Jeffrey A. Rosen.
