French Leftists Win Most Seats In Elections With Far-Right Falling Short: Projections

Macron votingA coalition of the French left that quickly banded together to beat a surging far right in legislative elections won the most seats in parliament but not a majority, according to polling projections Sunday, a stunning outcome that threatens to plunge the country into political and economic turmoil.

The projections put President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance in second, no longer in control of parliament, and the bruised far right in third.

With no bloc securing a clear majority, France faces uncertainty that could rattle markets and its economy, the European Union’s second-largest, and cast a shadow of political instability over the Paris Olympics opening in less than three weeks.

Air strike leaves 100,000 without power in Ukraine

Man without power in UkraineA Russian attack on a power facility in Ukraine has left 100,000 people without power in the north-western region of Sumy.

Work is under way to restore power, National grid operator Ukrenergo said, following the strikes, which caused emergency shut-offs for consumers in the city and region of Sumy, which borders Russia.

There were no reports of casualties or damage apart from the energy facility, Reuters reports.

Russia continues to pummel energy facilities across Ukraine, often plunging the country into extended blackouts with people enduring sweltering summer conditions without running water, air conditioning, or life-saving medical equipment.

The French republic is under threat. We are 1,000 historians and we cannot remain silent

Marine Le PenFor the first time since the second world war, the far right is at the gates of power in France. As historians from differing political backgrounds who share an attachment to democratic values and the rule of law, we cannot remain silent in the face of an alarming prospect that we still have the capacity to resist.

Despite a superficial makeover, the National Rally (RN) remains fundamentally the successor and heir of the National Front, founded in 1972 by people nostalgic for Vichy and French Algeria.

It inherited its programme, its obsessions and its personnel. It is deeply rooted in the history of the French far right, shaped by xenophobic and racist nationalism, antisemitism, violence and contempt for parliamentary democracy. Let us not be fooled by the rhetorical and tactical prudence with which the RN is preparing its seizure of power. This party does not represent the conservative or national right but poses the greatest threat to the republic and democracy.

Hamas accepts US proposal on talks over Israeli hostages, Hamas source says

Hamas accepts dealHamas has accepted a U.S. proposal to begin talks on releasing Israeli hostages, including soldiers and men, 16 days after the first phase of an agreement aimed at ending the Gaza war, a senior Hamas source told Reuters on Saturday.

The militant Islamist group has dropped a demand that Israel first commit to a permanent ceasefire before signing the agreement, and would allow negotiations to achieve that throughout the six-week first phase, the source told Reuters on condition of anonymity because the talks are private.

A Palestinian official close to the internationally mediated peace efforts had said the proposal could lead to a framework agreement if embraced by Israel and would end the nine-month-old war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian wins Iran's presidential election. What it means.

Masoud PezeshkianA little-known heart surgeon who campaigned on limited, closer ties with the West and some reforms to strict moral codes for women prevailed in Iran's run-off presidential vote, the country's interior ministry said Saturday.

Cautious reformer Masoud Pezeshkian, 69, defeated Saeed Jalili, 58, an ultraconservative ideologue and former nuclear negotiator, according to Iran's state TV, citing the ministry. Pezeshkian's victory represents a blow to conservative political factions in Iran. In recent years, moderate voices have been sidelined.

However, Pezeshkian was expected to have little immediate impact on the Islamic Republic's policies because Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 85, tightly controls all top domestic and foreign matters of state. But Iran's new president will likely be closely involved in selecting Khamenei's successor and because he runs the government day-to-day, he can influence the overall tone of Iran's domestic and foreign policy.

Ukraine’s army forced to retreat as Russia closes in on strategically important town

Ukraone retrreats from Chasiv YarUkraine has said its army has retreated from a neighborhood in the outskirts of Chasiv Yar.

It comes as the strategically important town in the eastern Donetsk region has been reduced to rubble under a months-long Russian assault.

Chasiv Yar lies a short distance west Bakhmut, which was captured by Russia last year after a bitter 10-month battle. For months, Russian forces have focused on capturing Chasiv Yar, a town which occupies a strategic, elevated location. Its fall would put nearby cities in jeopardy, compromise critical Ukrainian supply routes and bring Russia closer to its stated aim of seizing the entire Donetsk region.
