Ukraine's Zelensky acknowledges offensive in Russia

Ukraine war comes to Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged, for the first time, that his military is conducting an offensive inside Russia's western Kursk region.

In his nightly televised address on Saturday, Mr Zelensky said Ukraine's military is pushing the war "onto the aggressor's territory."

This comes five days after Ukraine began its operation, which has taken Russia by surprise and prompted mass evacuations across both sides of the border.

In Ukraine, explosions were reported in the capital Kyiv and in the Sumy region in the early hours of Sunday.

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said air defence units are "operating" and air raid alerts continue in the city. Writing on the Telegram messaging app he warned civilians to stay in shelters.

White House slams ‘outrageous’ statement from Israeli minister on cease-fire deal

SmotrichThe Biden administration unleashed a torrent of criticism against Israel’s polarizing finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, on Friday after he referred to cease-fire negotiations with Hamas as a “dangerous trap.”

White House national security communications adviser John Kirby said a lengthy statement posted by Smotrich to the social platform X made “ridiculous charges” regarding his opposition to a cease-fire deal to end the fighting in Gaza.

“Some critics, like Mr. Smotrich, for example, have claimed that the hostage deal is a surrender to Hamas or that hostages should not be exchanged for prisoners. Mr. Smotrich essentially suggests that the war ought to go on indefinitely without pause and with the lives of the hostages of no real concern at all,” Kirby said.

Gaza's Civil Emergency Service said dozens were wounded in addition to the fatalities in the schools of Hassan Salama and Al-Nasser, which housed Palestinian displaced families.

Hamas, Iran vow 'harsh' response to killing of Ismail Haniyeh

Ismael HaniyehHamas' top political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed Wednesday in an apparent assassination at his residence in Tehran, drawing reprisal pledges from the militant group and Iran and fueling deeper concern that Israel's war in Gaza could rapidly expand across the Middle East.

Haniyeh and his bodyguard were killed after attending an inauguration ceremony for the new Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian, Hamas and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced.

Hamas and Iran immediately blamed Israel, which has pledged to take down Hamas leaders responsible for the Oct. 7 attack that left almost 1,200 people dead and about 250 taken hostage.

Speaking to the nation in Hebrew, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not address Haniyeh's death but said, according to a translation: "We are not going to be silent. We'll make everyone pay the price, everyone that murders us, anyone that takes our children.''

Ukraine-Russia latest: Blow for Putin’s forces as Crimea airfield hit and Russia drone debris found in Romania

Drones hit Russian military field

Ukraine said today its missile forces carried out a strike on a Russian military airfield in Crimea that has been used for long-range attacks against it, the latest in a series of blows to the Russian military on the occupied peninsula.

“This is one of the operational airfields that Russia uses to control the airspace, in particular the Black Sea, and for launching airstrikes on Ukrainian territory,” it said.

It comes as Romania has confirmed that fragments of a Russian drone entered its territory, one day after Russia targeted Ukraine with a bombardment of 38 long-range drones.

Ukraine’s Air Force said three of the drones “were lost after crossing the state border with Romania”.

The Ukrainian military’s general staff said in a statement that Russia‘s Saky airfield in western Crimea was the latest target to be struck and that it was assessing the aftermath.
