Salvation Army Official: Gays Deserve Death

Salvation ArmyJust in time to ruin Gay Pride month, a media relations director for the Salvation Army had no problem reminding us and the queer journalists he was talking to that gays should be put to death.

Poland shaken by case alleging an illicit CIA prison there

CIA prison in PolandFor years, the idea seemed unthinkable, absurd. A secret U.S. detention center in a remote corner of Poland, where al-Qaida suspects were brutally interrogated by the CIA? About as likely as "the Loch Ness monster," is how one Pole described it recently.

‘5 Broken Cameras’: Can West Bank Film Change Israel?

Emad BurnatA few years ago, the Israeli human-rights group B’Tselem distributed several hundred videocameras to Palestinians in the West Bank and asked them to record the daily abuses they experienced at the hands of Israeli soldiers and settlers.

The group sensed that most Israelis had grown indifferent to the military dominion Israel has maintained over the Palestinians for 45 years now, a phenomenon B’Tselem hoped to reverse.

EugenicsQ: WHAT HAPPENED IN NORTH CAROLINA?

A. Under the state's eugenics program, which began in 1929, more than 7,600 people underwent sterilizations. Some procedures were forced to weed out the "feebleminded" while others were a voluntary form of birth control. Up to 1,800 people who were sterilized in North Carolina may be alive. The state has verified 146 living victims.

Unlike most states, the North Carolina program expanded after World War II, and shifted toward targeting poor black women.

11 Years in Prison for Posting on an Atheist Website?

All over the world, people skeptical of religion face profound mistreatment.

Aan was arrested in a small town in West Sumatra on January 18 after a number of local residents assaulted him at work in an act of self-styled vigilantism. They were reacting to some of his postings on a Facebook page devoted to atheism: a note entitled “the Prophet Muhammad was attracted to his own daughter-in-law”; a comic suggesting the Prophet slept with his wife’s maid; and a status update reading, “If you believe in god, then please show him to me.”

Supreme Court rejects appeals of foreign detainees held more than 10 years at Guantanamo

US Supreme CourtThe Supreme Court on Monday declined to take a new look at the rights of foreign prisoners held for the past decade at the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba.

Four years after pronouncing that detainees who face no charges have a right to challenge their ongoing confinement, the justices rejected appeals arguing that the federal appeals court in Washington has largely ignored the high court’s command.

Israel violates international human rights law: HRW

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has criticized Israel for a new piece of legislation that allows the detention of migrants without charge, stressing that the law is in violation of international human rights regulations.

On June 3, Tel Aviv announced that migrants who illegally crossed into Israel could face a detention of up to three years.
