Joseph Bologna, an actor, writer, and director known for his role in 1982’s “My Favorite Year” and for his long collaboration on stage and screen with wife Renée Taylor, has died after a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 82.
Bologna died Sunday morning at City of Hope in Duarte, California. Just last month, Bologna attended a 35th anniversary screening of “My Favorite Year” in Los Angeles. Bologna played the explosive TV star King Kaiser in the backstage comedy inspired by Mel Brooks’ experiences as a young TV writer on Sid Caesar’s legendary “Your Show of Shows.”
Taylor said Bologna had “a beautiful life and a beautiful death.” Bologna died just two days after the couple celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary.

California preparing to sue Trump administration
California is poised to sue the Trump administration over the president’s latest attempt to punish jurisdictions tagged by the Justice Department as “sanctuary cities” that harbor undocumented immigrants, according to two sources close to the case.
California Attorney General Xavier Becerra — in conjunction with other California city and county attorneys — is considering charging the Justice Department with violating the Constitution by threatening to take crime-fighting funds away from cities and states that do not fully cooperate with federal immigration agents, according to those sources.
Justice Dept. says feds will deny grants to sanctuary cities
The Justice Department on Thursday said it will withhold federal grant money to law enforcement agencies in so-called "sanctuary cities" unless they assist Homeland Security in deporting undocumented people who their departments identify.
In a memo released online, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said municipalities that have refused to comply with federal agencies seeking to deport undocumented people are endangering the safety of officers and the public. He cited a case in Portland, Ore., where an illegal alien who's been deported "20 times" was accused of sexually assaulting an elderly woman.
Three killed in Honolulu high-rise fire
Three people died in a fire that started on the 26th floor of a 36-story apartment building in Honolulu, officials said.
The high-rise blaze began at 2:15 p.m. Friday in the 538-unit Marco Polo Apartments on Kapiolani Boulevard, the Honolulu Fire Department said. The fire spread to the 27th and 28th floors, KHON reported..
Two women and a man were found dead in two apartments, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said. Investigators are looking into the fire's cause.
Hobby Lobby fined $3M for smuggling Iraq religious artifacts
Hobby Lobby Stores has agreed to pay a $3 million federal fine and forfeit thousands of ancient Iraqi religious artifacts smuggled from the Middle East that the government alleges were intentionally mislabeled for import, federal prosecutors said.
The Oklahoma City-based craft store chain's devout Christian owners have long shown an interest in the biblical Middle East and started to collect artifacts from the region in 2009, according to a civil complaint filed in New York on Wednesday. Hobby Lobby President Steve Green is the owner of one of the largest collections of religious artifacts in the world and is building a Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., due to open in the fall.

Forty-one states have refused the Trump administration's request for certain voter information, according to a CNN inquiry to all 50 states.
State leaders and voting boards across the country have responded to the letter with varying degrees of cooperation -- from altogether rejecting the request to expressing eagerness to supply information that is public.

In an instant, molten slag gushed over workers at Tampa Electric power plant
It was the kind of job that workers at the Big Bend power plant do routinely, and one done countless times in the nearly 35 years that senior plant operator Michael McCort had worked at Tampa Electric.
But company executives said something went tragically wrong Thursday as McCort, 60, and at least five employees working for outside contractors tried to unplug a tank containing molten slag that can reach temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees.
