Federal judge green-lights desegregation housing rule after Carson tries to block it

Ben Carson tried to block rule that bebefits poor

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) needs to implement an Obama-era rule on January 1, 2018 that enables low-income people to afford housing in high-opportunity areas with better schools, a federal judge ordered Saturday.

Under the leadership of Secretary Ben Carson, HUD announced in August it was delaying the rule for two years, saying the agency needed to further evaluate it. Several civil rights organizations — including the Legal Defense Fund — immediately filed a lawsuit against the agency’s decision. Chief Judge Beryl A. Howell ruled against HUD Saturday evening, saying it did not provide “notice and comment or particularized evidentiary findings” to substantiate delaying the rule.

Hundreds get sick on Royal Caribbean cruise — again

Hundreds take ill on Royal Caribbean cruise line

More than 300 passengers became ill on a Royal Caribbean cruise out of Florida last week, the second time in less than a month that sickness swept through passengers and crew on one of the cruise line's ships.

Royal Caribbean said 332 cases of gastrointestinal illness were reported on the Independence of the Seas before it returned Saturday to Port Everglades, Fla., after a five-night cruise.

Disney buys Fox TV, film studios as part of major $52B deal

Disney buys Fox TV, film studiosThe Walt Disney Company announced Thursday it will acquire entertainment assets from 21st Century Fox in a deal worth more than $52 billion in stock.

As part of the all-stock purchase, Disney will acquire the 20th Century Fox film and television conglomerate and assume nearly $14 billion in Fox debt.

The total value of 21st Century Fox's assets is estimated at $66.1 billion, Disney said.

New York City Ballet Chief Under Investigation for Sexual Harassment

Peter Martins, the artistic director of New York City Ballet and an instructor at School of American Ballet, has been accused of sexual harassment, and suspended from teaching his weekly class at the school, according to a new report.

According to an article in the New York Times, Martins has been accused of harassment in an anonymous letter. Both NYCB and the school told that publication that the allegations in the letter had not yet been substantiated but that the “safety and well-being of our students is our absolute priority.”

'Supergirl' producer Andrew Kreisberg fired after sexual misconduct investigation

Warner Bros. has fired Supergirl and Flash producer Andrew Kreisberg following an internal investigation involving sexual misconduct claims against him, the studio confirmed to USA TODAY Wednesday.

"After a thorough investigation, Warner Bros. Television Group has terminated Andrew Kreisberg’s employment, effective immediately,” said the studio in a statement provided by Warner Bros. spokesperson Tammy Golihew.

Federal court overturns Texas ban on abortion procedure

Pro choice advocates win one in TexasA federal judge on Wednesday overturned Texas’ ban of a common second trimester abortion procedure, setting back the state's latest effort to limit abortion.

U.S. District Court Judge Lee Yeakel said that the ban on “dilation and evacuation” abortions, approved by the Texas Legislature in May, would force women seeking second trimester abortions to resort to riskier, invasive alternatives.

Terry Glenn, former NFL wide receiver, dies in car accident in Texas

Terry Glenn dies in car crash
Former NFL wide receiver Terry Glenn has died after getting into a car accident Monday morning in Irving, Texas, according to police. He was 43.
The Irving Police Department said the crash occurred at 12:18 a.m. local time after Glenn, who was driving the car accompanied by a passenger, traveled off the eastbound lane at the 700 block of Highway 114 and crashed into a concrete barrier dividing the express lane from local lanes.
Glenn was ejected from the car and taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, where he died at 12:52 a.m., according to the Dallas County Medical Examiner's office.
