On June 26, the day that the New York Daily News published a straightforward smear piece on Greenwald, the website Buzzfeed rolled out a remarkably similar article, a lengthy profile that focused on Greenwald’s personal life and supposed eccentricities.

States with the most dangerous bridges

Missouri bridgeFrom rural covered passes to modern engineering marvels, bridges overcome natural obstacles and expedite transportation. Yet many of the bridges that people drive on every day are in rough shape. According to one transportation group, more than one in 10 of the country's bridges are in need of serious repair or replacement.

In many states, the situation is more dire. Nearly a quarter of the bridges in Pennsylvania are structurally deficient, the highest of all states, according to Transportation for America, a grassroots organization advocating updated transportation infrastructure.

Guantanamo criticized over inmate suicide

Latif suicideA report by the US military into the suicide of a Guantanamo detainee last year has criticised the facility's guards and medical staff for not following correct procedure.

Al Jazeera has obtained a copy of the report into the suicide of Adnan Latif, a 31-year-old Yemeni man who overdosed on anti-psychotic medication last September.
Latif was pronounced dead on September 8, 2012, the same day that his mother died, according to the report.

The human rights activist said Friday religious authorities perpetuate misguided doctrines of male superiority, from the Catholic Church forbidding women from becoming priests to some African cultures mutilating the genitals of young girls.

Gitmo protester, Diane Wilson, arrested after scaling White House fence

Diane WilmsonAn activist who has been protesting the continuous operation of the Guantanamo Bay military detention facility was arrested Wednesday after climbing over the fence on the north lawn of the White House.

Diane Wilson, a member of the activism group Code Pink, was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Washington, according to the organization’s official Twitter account.

Feds charge Jon Corzine for role in MF Global collapse

Jon CorzineFinancial regulators are taking aim at Jon Corzine for his role in the 2011 collapse of brokerage MF Global, announcing on Thursday that they are filing civil charges against the former New Jersey governor and senator.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission said it is suing Corzine, who was MF Global’s chief executive, and the firm’s former Assistant Treasurer Edith O’Brien for the unlawful use of about $1 billion in customer funds that “harmed thousands of customers and violated fundamental customer protection laws on an unprecedented scale.”
