Threat becomes reality as Florence hitsThe big slosh has begun, and the consequences could be disastrous.

Hurricane Florence's leading edge battered the Carolina coast Thursday, bending trees and shooting frothy sea water over streets on the Outer Banks, as the hulking storm closed in with 90 mph (135 kph) winds for a drenching siege that could last all weekend. Tens of thousands were without power.

Winds and rain were arriving later in South Carolina, and a few people were still walking on the sand at Myrtle Beach while North Carolina was getting pounded. Heavy rainfall began after dark.

France admits torture during Algeria's war of independence

France admits toturing Algerians in 1954 war for independenceFrance  acknowledged for the first time it was responsible for systematic torture during the Algerian war of independence in the mid-1950s.

President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that Maurice Audin, a communist pro-independence activist who disappeared in 1957, "died under torture stemming from the system instigated while Algeria was part of France."

Macron, who paid a visit to Audin's widow on Thursday, was also set to announce "the opening of archives on the subject of disappeared civilians and soldiers, both French and Algerian."

Police: Multiple fires, suspected gas explosions in Lawrence, Andover

Fires and explosions in Andover area

Emergency officials are urging people to get out of their houses and evacuate their neighborhoods in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover as firefighters battle dozens of gas explosions that leveled some houses and set fire to others over a large area.

"If you smell gas, you gotta get out of your home," Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera told reporters.

State police said any residents of the area with Columbia Gas service to their house should "evacuate immediately." State police are reporing 70 fires and gas explosions.

Police announced at 7 p.m that electricity in each of the three communities was being shut off to aid.

Manafort reaches 'tentative' plea deal with Mueller: report

Manafort reported to have tentative plea deal with MuellerFormer  Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort has reportedly reached a "tentative" plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller.

ABC News reported news of the tentative deal on Thursday, saying it is expected to be announced in court on Friday.

A pretrial conference is scheduled for Friday in federal court in Washington, D.C. On Thursday evening, Judge Amy Berman Jackson pushed the conference from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. No explanation was given for the delay.

Dianne Feinstein Acknowledges Having A Secret Brett Kavanaugh Document

Sen. Dianne FeinsteinSen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) acknowledged Thursday that she has a document concerning Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh that she has so far refused to share, despite behind-the-scenes requests to do so from her fellow Democrats on the Senate judiciary committee.

“I have received information from an individual concerning the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court,” Feinstein said in a statement. “That individual strongly requested confidentiality, declined to come forward or press the matter further, and I have honored that decision. I have, however, referred the matter to federal investigative authorities.”

‘60 Minutes’ Chief Jeff Fager Ousted Amid Allegations Of Inappropriate Conduct

Jeff Fager removed from CBS 60 minutesCBS Corp. has terminated “60 Minutes” producer Jeff Fager’s contract following a bombshell New Yorker article that accused the “60 Minutes” executive producer of sexual harassment.

Fager’s departure comes days after CBS announced the departure of its former CEO and chairman, Les Moonves, not long after two New Yorker articles detailed accusations of sexual misconduct against him.

Six former employees told The New Yorker that Fager would touch employees inappropriately while inebriated at company events, including an incident in which Fager allegedly commented on an associate producer’s breasts and then became “belligerent” when she refused his drunken advances. Fager denied the allegations to The New Yorker in an article that was published online in July.

Documents show $10M moved from FEMA to ICE

Fema funds transferred to ICEThe Trump administration has taken about $10 million away from the Federal Emergency Management Administration and given it to immigration authorities, documents of the plan show.

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., told MSBNC Tuesday a "Transfer and Reallocation" budget document he obtained outlines the reallocation of funds.

Merkley said the 39-page plan indicates the Department of Homeland Security requested $9.8 million from FEMA accounts. The documents said the money, about nine-tenths of one percent of FEMA's annual budget, would be transferred from FEMA's "Preparedness and Protection" and "Response and Recovery" undertakings to pay for detention beds and ICE's Transportation and Removal Program.

Federal deficit soars 32 percent to $895B

ocbThe federal deficit hit $895 billion in the first 11 months of fiscal 2018, an increase of $222 billion, or 32 percent, over the same period the previous year, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

The nonpartisan CBO reported that the central drivers of the increasing deficit were the Republican tax law and the bipartisan agreement to increase spending. As a result, revenue only rose 1 percent, failing to keep up with a 7 percent surge in spending, it added.

Revenue from individual and payroll taxes was up some $105 billion, or 4 percent, while corporate taxes fell $71 billion, or 30 percent.

People flee coast as Florence nears Carolinas

Florence causes mass evacuationsMore than 1.5 million people were ordered to evacuate their homes along the U.S. southeast coast as Hurricane Florence, the most powerful to menace the Carolinas in nearly three decades, barreled closer on Tuesday.

Florence, a Category 4 storm packing winds of 130 miles per hour (210 kph), was expected to make landfall on Friday, most likely in southeastern North Carolina near the South Carolina border, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
