How High Fructose Corn Syrup Makes you Gain Weight

New research from UT Southwestern Medical Center shows the amazing speed that our bodies make body fat from fructose. One of the reasons why low carb diets help you lose weight is that they reduce your intake of fructose.

“The message from this study is powerful because body fat synthesis was measured immediately after the sweet drinks were consumed,” Dr. Parks said. “The carbohydrates came into the body as sugars, the liver took the molecules apart like tinker toys, and put them back together to build fats. All this happened within four hours after the fructose drink. As a result, when the next meal was eaten, the lunch fat was more likely to be stored than burned.

TVNL Comment: For the past 20 years I have been saying that the soft drink industry is greatly responsible for the obviously abnormal rates of diabetes and obesity.  Too much sugar gets into the body too fast. What do you expect will happen when you consume soft drinks on a regular basis?

MPs 'misled over army torture'

Claims that a senior army general and a defence minister misled MPs and peers over British troops' use of banned interrogation techniques will be examined by a public inquiry into the mistreatment of prisoners, the Defence Secretary, Des Browne, said.

He spoke out in response to a complaint by the Joint Committee on Human Rights that assurances given to it by the armed forces minister Adam Ingram in 2004 and Lt-Gen Robin Brims, Commander Field Army in 2006, that hooding and other practices were not used, appeared to be false.

The moneychangers versus the U.S. Constitution

The most insidious enemy of the Constitution is the private moneychanger and its misuse of our security assets, military and police agencies. Never have we witnessed such blatant and relentless assaults on our Constitution, and the moneychangers are central to those assaults. The first major congressional assault was the secret Christmas holiday passage of the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. These assaults are directed to serve private interests, not the common citizen.

The threat posed by Saddam Hussein was his intention to trade Iraq's oil, not in petrodollars, but in Eurodollars. This threat was the real justification to deploy our military. Sales pitches such as “spreading democracy” and the security of Israel were widely promoted by the private news media, but Saddam's Eurodollar threat was the clincher. Similarly, that same media is now claiming that Iran is working on WMDs and poses a threat to nuclear-armed Israel. But also not widely publicized is the Iranian oil trades in Eurodollars. Reduction of the hegemony of the Federal Reserve and petrodollars is regarded as the true threat. Is there a pattern here?

Who Threatens You Most: The President, Congress, Fed--Or Iran?

ome day in the not-too-distant future, someone will pen a book called Who Wrecked America ? If the book is honest, fingers will be pointed at the crooks and liars in Washington DC and Wall Street, at lobbyists (pimps) and Congressmen (whores), at bankers and war toy makers, at AIPAC and PNAC, at presidents, executives and generals.

Doubtful that anyone will conclude that Iran had much to do with the destruction of America .

The American media certainly threatens me far more than Iran . Covert threat rather than overt. By continuously spreading false propaganda for a series of profitable yet fraudulent wars, the US mainstream media does as much or more to wreck this country than any US president.  Pundits lament that fewer Americans read the newspaper anymore. Critic Rick Shenkman calls us woodenheaded or boneheaded for our ignorance but fails to note a far more serious form of American ignorance called subtle brainwashing. By selectively reporting and slanting the "news," the corporate-owned US media is no different than a cabal of mullahs bent on controlling the behavior and opinion of the populace.

US admits soldiers killed innocent Iraqis

The U.S. military admitted Sunday that American soldiers killed innocent civilians after opening fire on a car last month on the heavily secured Baghdad airport road.

The statement — which called the man and two women killed "law abiding citizens of Iraq" — reversed earlier military claims that they were suspected militants who shot at a parked American convoy.

The soldiers involved in the shooting were particularly nervous because they were regularly based in eastern Baghdad and were not familiar with the area on the airport road, according to Lt. Col. Steve Stover, a spokesman for U.S. forces in Baghdad.

Army's torture of prisoners 'had official blessing'

Defence chiefs and ministers face fresh pressure over the treatment of civilians at the hands of British forces in Iraq today, as a new report revives fears that "torture" techniques have been used 30 years after they were banned.

A scathing report from the Joint Human Rights Committee (JHRC) warns that the use of "coercive interrogation techniques" may have been officially sanctioned, despite assurances that troops knew they were outlawed.

The JHRC report also found that the use of hooding and stress positioning by 1 Queen's Lancashire Regiment in 2003 was based on legal advice received from brigade headquarters. It claims that, at least until the Baha Mousa case came to light, the prohibition on the use of conditioning techniques "was not as clearly articulated to troops in Iraq as it might, and indeed should, have been".

Canada panel finds for man falsely linked to 9/11

A Muslim Canadian has been awarded C$11,000 over an incident in which a co-worker falsely concluded he was involved in the September 11, 2001, attacks and reported him to police.

Ghassan Asad was a victim of racial profiling as an Arab immigrant who had traveled to the United States a month before the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal ruled on Wednesday.

Industry Gushed Money After Reversal on Drilling

Campaign contributions from oil industry executives to Sen. John McCain rose dramatically in the last half of June, after the senator from Arizona made a high-profile split with environmentalists and reversed his opposition to the federal ban on offshore drilling.

Oil and gas industry executives and employees donated $1.1 million to McCain last month -- three-quarters of which came after his June 16 speech calling for an end to the ban -- compared with $116,000 in March, $283,000 in April and $208,000 in May.

TVNL Comment: Gee, what happened to the term "flip-flop"? Oh, that was reserved for Democrats.

Judge Overturns Accords in 4 Suits by 9/11 Victims

A federal judge in Manhattan took the unusual step on Thursday of overturning settlements in four lawsuits filed on behalf of victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, saying the firm that negotiated the deals was seeking excessive legal fees and that the settlement amounts themselves were unreasonable.

The lawsuits represented only a small number of the 9/11 victims, whose claims in most cases were resolved through payments from a government compensation fund that paid $7 billion to families of those killed or injured in the attacks, according to the fund’s 2004 report.
