Gonzales Stopped FBI Probe Of Rep. Harman Because He 'Needed Jane' To Support Warrantless Wiretapping

CQ's Jeff Stein reports that sometime before the 2006 elections, the National Security Agency wiretapped Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA) offering a quid pro quo to unnamed Israeli agents: Harman would lobby the Justice Department to "reduce espionage-related charges against two officials of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee," while the Israelis would lobby soon-to-be House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to name Harman chair of the Intelligence Committee.

Of Black Holes and Radio Silence

A former prosecutor examines the special prosecutor debate.

There is no doubt that sometime in 2002 - if not before - Bush administration officials and their lawyers began orchestrating a torture campaign, which they calculatedly attempted to justify through specious legal memos. They continued to abuse prisoners, and to conceal that mistreatment from Congress and the public, through at least 2008. In all of this conduct, they have committed grave crimes for which they must be held accountable. I believe this to be a national imperative of the highest order.

420: Thoughts on Pot vs. Alcohol from a Former Police Chief

Our professional experiences have led us to conclude that the more dangerous an illicit substance--from crack to krank--the greater the justification for its legalization, regulation, and control. It is the prohibition of drugs that leads inexorably to high rates of death, disease, crime, and addiction.

Back to booze vs. pot. How do the effects of these two drugs stack up against specific health and public safety factors?

US Senate panel to look at future of newspapers

"The increase in media conglomerates has resulted in an increase in agenda-driven reporting and over time, if those of us who value a diversity of opinion and ideas, and are unafraid to be confronted with pointed commentary and analysis, do not act, it is a situation which will only get worse," Kerry wrote. The senator has received political endorsements over the years from the Globe's editorial page, which is operated separately from its news-gathering operation.

'IDF soldiers forced to take part in medical experiment'

Less than a month after an expert panel accused the defense establishment of "grave ethical failures" in testing an experimental anthrax vaccine on hundreds of soldiers, Israel Radio revealed Sunday that soldiers from the Duhifat Battalion were forced to participate in another experiment 15 years ago.

Power Lines Linked to Alzheimer's and Senile Dementia

Living near power lines may significantly increase a person’s risk of death from Alzheimer’s disease or senile dementia.

Researchers from the University of Bern, Switzerland, have found that people who lived within 50 metres of a long-distance power transmission line were 1.24 times more likely to die of Alzheimer’s disease than those who lived 600 metres or more away.

Those who had lived near the power line for five years or more had 1.51 times the risk of those living farther away. This risk was increased 1.71 times for those who had lived close to a power line for 10 years, and two times for those who had lived within 50 meters for 15 years or more.

Israel Railways changes its story over dismissal of Arab employees

Israel Railways changed its story Sunday over the dismissal of at least 40 Arab employees, telling a court that mistakes made by the employees prompted it to introduce new employment conditions.

Attorney Tawfiq Tibi, who represents about 20 of the employees who petitioned the court, said the dismissals were a case of double discrimination.

"They discriminated against them firstly by firing them, and the second time by preventing those who did not serve in the army from applying for the job," Tibi said.

Workers steered to high-risk investing

Federal rule imposed just before market crash.

Shortly before the first signs of the stock market collapse, the Bush administration made a crucial decision that has propelled an estimated one to two million workers into stock-heavy retirement funds.

The administration's decisions came in response to a congressional mandate to encourage more workers to participate in company-sponsored retirement savings plans. The Bush administration came up with a rule that enabled businesses to automatically enroll their workers in tax-free 401(k) retirement plans.

WE NEED A REVOLUTION - NOT TEA PARTIES

That's like saying we don't agree with your oppressive, unconstitutional despotism of our nation and to show our ire in no uncertain terms we're going to break public law and disrupt the peace so take that, nah- nah-ne-boo-boo. But don't worry because we'll put everything back when we're done as if nothing happened cuz we don't want any trouble!

TVNL Comment: I have said many times, as I returned from MASSIVE protests against the Bush administration that were ignored by the media...with phones, faxes, cell phones, e-mail, blogs, polls, mail, overnight express mail and carrier pigeons....if we need to go to Washington D.C. in person, to tell our representatives in government to represent us...the purpose of the trip should be to remove them from office and replace them with people who will represent us! - Jesse Richard
