NC court rules UNC digital IDs not valid at the polls

UNC IDs not valid at pollsThe North Carolina Court of Appeals on Friday overturned a lower court’s decision to accept the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s mobile One Card as valid voter identification.

The ruling supported the plaintiff’s argument that the digital ID would make it easier for ineligible voters to cast ballots and violate a state law that prohibits mobile use during voting.

An unnamed group of three judges approved the appeal from the Republican National Committee and the N.C. Republican Party unanimously today which can be appealed at the federal level.

DNC attorneys say that preventing its use could confuse or even disenfranchise up to 40,000 people who work or attend the school so close to the election according to ABC. Former President Trump has a .6 percent lead in the battleground state which could be crucial in determining the next commander-in-chief.

Justice Department sues Alabama, claiming it purged voters too close to the election

DOJ suing Alabama

The U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit Friday against Alabama and its top election official, alleging a state program violated federal law by removing voters from its election rolls too close to this fall’s general election.

While states can remove a person’s name from their lists of registered voters if, for example, the person asks to be taken off, has died or, in many places, been convicted of certain crimes, the National Voter Registration Act sets what’s known as a “quiet period” before federal elections for most states.

Alabama and other states covered by the federal law are not allowed to systematically remove names fewer than 90 days before a federal election.

MyPillow founder Mike Lindell denies nod to neo-Nazis in new ad campaign

Mike Lindell denies nod to Nazis

The MyPillow company and its founder, Mike Lindell, a far-right influencer and acolyte of Donald Trump, are continuing to run a promotion despite criticism that it utilizes numerical symbols associated with neo-Nazism.

The company has been touting a promotion for a pillow with a sale price of $14.88 and it was still on offer on Friday morning.

Apart from being an odd price on its face, the Anti-Defamation League has noted that “1488” is a numeric hate symbol – “14” being a nod to the “14 Words” white supremacist slogan: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children” and “88” being a code for “Heil Hitler”, as H is the eighth letter of the alphabet.

Supreme Court declines to restore RFK Jr.’s name on New York presidential ballot

SC rejects RFK Jr.'s bid re NY ballot

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will not appear as a candidate for president on New York’s ballot after the Supreme Court declined to restore his name.

Kennedy was excluded from the state’s ballot after lower courts determined the independent candidate falsely claimed residency there because his Katonah, N.Y., address was not his fixed and permanent residency.

His attorneys argued in court filings that taking him off the ballot would deprive his New York supporters of their right to cast their votes for him, noting that the lower courts did not find that anyone was “misled.”

“The address on Kennedy’s petition was and is entirely immaterial — both to voters and to New York,” his attorneys wrote in their request, also noting that the independent candidate had rented a room in the home of a childhood friend and stayed there overnight on one occasion.

Wisconsin Supreme Court rules RFK Jr. will remain on November ballot

RFK Jr.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court rejected Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s efforts to remove his name from the state’s presidential ballot in a Friday ruling.

Last week, the Supreme Court accepted Kennedy’s appeal against the Wisconsin Elections Commission, which last month said the independent candidate was to remain on the ballot.

Wisconsin’s highest court pointed to a state law that prevents independent candidates who file nomination papers before the Aug. 6 deadline from being removed from the ballot unless they die. The state’s election commission citied the same statue in its August decision.

Kennedy suspended his campaign in August and endorsed former President Trump. Since then, Kennedy launched legal efforts to remove his name from ballots in battleground states with the goal to boost support for Trump.

Newsmax, Smartmatic Reach Settlement In 2020 Election Defamation Case

Ssmartmatic settles NewMax caseA settlement has been reached in a defamation lawsuit pitting an electronic voting machine manufacturer targeted by allies of former President Donald Trump against a conservative news outlet that aired accusations of vote manipulation in the 2020 election.

Newsmax on Thursday confirmed a deal had been reached but further details were not disclosed. Smartmatic, the voting machine company, has claimed that Newsmax program hosts and guests made false and defamatory statements in November and December 2020 implying that Smartmatic participated in rigging the results and that its software was used to switch votes.

Newsmax argued that it was simply reporting on newsworthy allegations being made by Trump and his supporters, including former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and conservative attorney Sidney Powell.

Rudy Giuliani Disbarred In D.C. After Pushing Trump's False 2020 Election Claims

Rudy disbarred in DCFormer New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was disbarred in Washington on Thursday, months after he lost his law license in New York for pursuing false claims that then-President Donald Trump made about his 2020 presidential election loss.

The brief ruling from Washington D.C.’s appeals court said Giuliani did not respond to an order to explain why he should not be disbarred in Washington after he was in New York last summer.

Ted Goodman, a spokesperson for Giuliani, called the decision “an absolute travesty and a total miscarriage of justice.” Giuliani has argued that he believed the claims he was making on behalf of the Trump campaign were true.
