Four deaths on a Gaza beachFreelance photographer Lazar Simeonov watched from his Gaza apartment window on the afternoon July 16 as three Israeli shells struck a shack at the edge of a beach where seven young boys played. When the dust settled, four of them — all members of the Bakr extended family — lay dead, apparently victims of a mistake by the Israeli military on the ninth day of its Operation Protective Edge in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Simeonov and a number of other foreign journalists staying nearby ran to the beach. He was horrified by the scene he found there: Four children lay dead on the sand and nearby dock, their lifeless bodies torn apart by the blasts.

Israel police reveal huge political corruption investigation

Gershon MesikaIsrael’s police have said they are investigating dozens of public figures and politicians in a major corruption case that could affect upcoming elections.

The politicians involved were not named in Wednesday’s announcement, but after a year-long covert operation, police said they are investigating 30 suspects including a deputy minister, a former minister, mayors and others.

In a statement, police said officials are suspected of nepotism, and illegal transferring of funds.

Iran unveils monument for fallen Jewish-Iranian soldiers

In a ceremony in Tehran on Monday, a senior Iranian parliament member praised the Iranian Jewish community’s ties to the state and its “obedience” to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Ruhollah Khomeini before him.

North Korea behind Sony cyber attack

The InterviewU.S. authorities have determined that North Korea is behind the recent cyber attack on Sony Pictures, a federal law enforcement official said Wednesday.

The official, who is not authorized to comment publicly, said a formal announcement of attribution by the U.S. government could come as soon as Thursday.  U.S. investigators had been moving quickly toward a determination in recent days, indicating earlier this week that attribution was imminent.

CIA Made False Claims Torture Prevented Heathrow Attacks

CIA false claims The Central Intelligence Agency repeatedly and falsely claimed that its use of torture had enabled it to stop attacks on London’s Heathrow Airport and Canary Wharf, according to the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The report into “enhanced interrogation techniques” published in Washington yesterday said that “thwarting of the Heathrow Airport and Canary Wharf plotting is one of the eight most frequently cited examples” that the agency gave to justify torture. In reality, neither plot was advanced, and both had been effectively disrupted when the people the CIA tortured for the information were captured.

Suicide bomber attacks British Embassy vehicleA suicide bomber attacked a British embassy vehicle in the Afghan capital on Thursday, killing five people including one Briton, officials said.

The blast in the east of Kabul wounded 33 people, including many bystanders, the latest in a wave of bombings to hit the city as the majority of foreign combat troops prepare to withdraw from the country by the end of the year.
