College swimmers suspended after racial slur scratched on to student’s body

College swim team member cut N word onto student's chest

At least two students at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania have been suspended from the swim team after a report that a racial slur was scratched onto a student’s body, officials said.

Officials received “a deeply concerning report of a racial slur being scratched on to a student using a plastic or ceramic tool,” officials at the liberal arts school said in a statement last week.

“This is a serious report, which is being actively assessed through the student conduct process,” the college said. “At this point, the students involved are not participating in swim team activities.”

The school declined to release further details, citing the investigation and privacy laws.

'Grieving-type screaming': 4 dead in mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama

mass shooting in Alabama

At least four people were killed, more than a dozen were wounded and a search was underway Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama, after a shooting rampage in a crowded entertainment district Saturday night.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said two men and a woman died at the scene and a fourth died a short time later at a local hospital. First responders rushed some wounded people to hospitals while others began arriving at hospitals around the city on their own, he said.

Fitzgerald said it appeared multiple shooters fired into a crowd but that it was not clear whether they were on foot or in cars. He said the shooting did not appear random and that officers were trying to determine who was targeted. No suspects were in custody.

Marcee Gray

The mother of the 14-year-old Georgia student charged in the Apalachee High School shooting that killed four people has been indicted in a domestic violence case involving her mother in 2023, according to reports.

On Monday, a grand jury indicted Marcee Gray, 43, on charges of exploiting and intimidating a disabled person or elderly adult, false imprisonment, criminal damage to property and theft, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Saturday.

The charges are unrelated to the mass shooting her son, Colt, is accused of committing on Sept. 4 that killed teachers Cristina Irimie, 53, and Richard Aspinwall, 39, and students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14. Nine other students were injured in the incident.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation also arrested the teen's father, Colin Gray, on Sept. 5, and prosecutors have charged him with two counts of murder, four counts of involuntary manslaughter and eight counts of child cruelty.

Elite US universities rake in millions from big oil donations, research finds

Columbia U

Prestigious US universities are raking in millions of dollars from fossil fuel interests, raising concerns about conflicts of interest. And one university even appears to have owned a petroleum company from which it has earned millions of dollars, according to a spate of new reports produced by student organizers.

The six analyses, released Wednesday, focus on American University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Princeton University, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and University of California, San Diego. They were written by campus organizers at each respective institution and released by Campus Climate Network, an international student-led coalition that is pushing colleges to cut ties with big oil.

“Fossil fuel companies are hijacking our universities to perpetuate their own toxic industry, and we students are not having it anymore,” Will Kattrup, a research lead at Campus Climate Network, said on Wednesday.
