California lawmakers are the latest to weigh joining efforts in other states to gain control over a controversial national program that automatically checks the immigration status of arrestees.

The Golden State accounts for more than a third of the deportations under the Immigration and Customs Enforcement program, and some local officials are saying they were misled by the federal government about the program's extent.

Abortion foes scored a third major win Wednesday when a bill to regulate abortion clinics cleared the Kansas Legislature. The Senate voted 24-15 to approve a bill requiring the state’s three abortion clinics to be inspected twice a year, including one unannounced review.

The bill goes to Republican Gov. Sam Brownback, a staunch abortion opponent who’s expected to sign the measure. The governor has already signed two other abortion bills, including one that further restricts abortions after 21 weeks of pregnancy.

Sex trafficking is so widespread, said Nathan Wilson, founder of the Project Meridian Foundation in Arlington, which helps police identify traffickers and their victims, that “no country, no race, no religion, no class and no child is immune.”

He said 1.6 million children under 18 — native and foreign born — have been caught up in this country’s sex trade. But, he said, the actual number of victims is hard to quantify because of the lengths to which traffickers go to keep their crimes hidden.

Gay students at a South Carolina university are being advised to conceal their sexual orientation when off campus. The warning follows an attack April 9 on an openly gay 19-year-old, WBTV in Charlotte, N.C., reported.

Kelly James, a professor of sociology and criminology at Winthrop University in Rock Hill and adviser to a gay group, says she is educating her students know about the attack.

"My first thought was that, I've got to let my students know so that when they are out and about in Rock Hill that they, you know, act straight, And that's a sad lesson in 2011 to be teaching young people. I mean, it's been off the books as a mental illness since 1973," James said.

Everything that you own is slowly being taken away from you.  It is being done purposely and it is being done by design.  Many Americans like to think of themselves as "well off", but as will be demonstrated below, we don't "own" nearly as much as we think that we do.  The truth is that most of us have to frantically run around accumulating wealth as rapidly as we can so that we can somehow stay ahead of the rate that wealth is being taken away from us.  The entire system is designed to take what you have away from you.  There are many ways that this is accomplished - taxation, inflation, debt, interest, fines, fees, tickets, government seizures and good old-fashioned corporate greed.  If you tried to just sit back and do nothing but hold on to the wealth that you already have you would find out that it would disappear rather quickly.  When you take the time to really analyze our system the conclusion is undeniable - everything that you think that you own is being systematically taken away from you.
