'It's completely unsustainable': Republican lawmaker doubles down, knocks Trump tax bill

Ron JohnsonSen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisconsin, is doubling down on his concerns about a bill that would make sweeping changes to taxes, Medicaidfood stamps and more after it was passed last month in the Republican-led House at the urging of President Donald Trump.

The more-than-1,000-page bill narrowly cleared the lower chamber on May 22. Now, it faces an uncertain future in the Senate, where some conservatives have raised concerns about the legislation's cost.

"It's completely unsustainable," Johnson said in an interview on Fox's "Sunday Morning Futures."

Homeland Security Cops Invade NY Congressman’s Office, Handcuff Aide

Jerry Nadler

Last month, after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested Newark, N.J., Mayor Ras Baraka outside an immigration detention facility, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official said on CNN that there would “likely be more arrests coming.”

DHS police came close to delivering on that threat this past week when they invaded the Manhattan offices of Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) and briefly handcuffed one of his staffers.

“They’re behaving like fascists,” Nadler told the New York Times in an interview about the incident this weekend. On CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), told host Dana Bash: “I think the administration is clearly trying to intimidate Democrats, in the same way that they’re trying to intimidate the country.

The incident, first reported by the New York City news site Gothamist, occurred Wednesday after DHS agents accused staffers of “harboring rioters” in their offices, which is located in the same building as a federal immigration courthouse. A partial video of the incident obtained by Gothamist shows one officer handcuffing a crying woman while another Nadler staffer demands that agents provide a warrant before entering.

Republican Iowa congresswoman booed at town hall over Trump policies

Ashley Hinson booed

Constituents booed Republican congresswoman Ashley Hinson at a town hall in her Iowa district Wednesday when she praised Donald Trump’s tax-and-spending plan and spoke approvingly of the “department of government efficiency’s” (Doge) efforts to downsize the federal government.

It was the latest instance of a Republican lawmaker being taken to task at a public event over their support for Trump’s policies, and came days after Hinson had voted for the the One Big Beautiful bill when it passed the House of Representatives. The wide-ranging bill will extend tax cuts enacted during Trump’s first term, create new deductions for tips, overtime and car loan interest and fund mass deportations, while slashing federal social safety net programs.

Hinson drew a chorus of boos when she told the audience in the town of Decorah that she was “proud” to have voted for the bill. “This is your time,” she said over the din. A similar outburst occurred from the audience at mention of Doge, which Hinson said she had received positive feedback about during an event elsewhere.

Former Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel Of New York Dies At Age 94

Charles Rangel

Former U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel of New York, an outspoken, gravel-voiced Harlem Democrat who spent nearly five decades on Capitol Hill and was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, died Monday at age 94.

His family confirmed the death in a statement provided by City College of New York spokesperson Michelle Stent. He died at a hospital in New York, Stent said.

A veteran of the Korean War, he defeated legendary Harlem politician Adam Clayton Powell in 1970 to start his congressional career. During the next 40-plus years, he became a legend himself as dean of the New York congressional delegation and, in 2007, the first African American to chair the powerful Ways and Means Committee.

Republicans reject Trump tax-cut bill after president calls for unity

House Budget CommitteePresident Donald Trump's sweeping tax bill failed to clear a key procedural hurdle on May 16, as hardline Republicans demanding deeper spending cuts blocked the measure in a rare political setback for the Republican president in Congress.

The vote in the House Budget Committee came despite Trump's call for Republicans to "UNITE behind" the legislation. "We don't need 'GRANDSTANDERS' in the Republican Party. STOP TALKING, AND GET IT DONE!" he said in a social media post.

Five of 21 Republicans on the panel voted to block the measure, saying they would continue to withhold support unless Speaker Mike Johnson agreed to further cuts to the Medicaid health care program for lower-income Americans and the full repeal of green energy tax cuts implemented by Democrats.

Ocasio-Cortez slams GOP threats to Medicaid: ‘They’re robbing people’

AOC

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) slammed Republicans for threats to Medicaid funding, arguing they’re “robbing people” to benefit “the rich.”

She’s been a vocal critic of proposed reductions for the program that provides access to healthcare for low-income families and individuals with disabilities.

“They’re robbing people in order to hand it over to the rich,” Ocasio-Cortez told Rolling Stone. “Medicaid is one of the largest insurers in the United States of America.”

GOP members have already slated reductions totaling over $800 billion through recommendations from the House’s Energy and Commerce Committee. Two controversial Medicaid funding cut proposals have already been nixed or reconsidered, however. Members of the committee will hold a markup for the budget reconciliation bill this week.
