U.S. officials now say Osama bin Laden was not killed in a firefight, and was not armed when he died. The officials backed away from a number of claims made about the Pakistan raid by U.S. SEALs that killed the al-Qaida founder and leader Sunday night.
Politico reported Tuesday that during an off-camera briefing late Monday officials confirmed a woman was among the five people killed in the raid, but said she was not bin Laden's wife and bin Laden had not used her as a human shield.

New report confirms Arctic melt accelerating
Arctic ice is melting faster than expected and could raise the average global sea level by as much as five feet this century, an authoritative new report suggests. The study by the international Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program, or AMAP, is one of the most comprehensive updates on climate change in the Arctic, and builds on a similar assessment in 2005.
The full report will be delivered to foreign ministers of the eight Arctic nations next week, but an executive summary including the key findings was obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday.
Lawsuits, rally in Albany question company's ability to extend land leases for fracking
Nearly 250 landowners in the Southern Tier are suing to stop a large gas company from indefinitely extending leases that landowners want to end.
While no Central New York landowners are involved in the suits, hundreds of local people received the same lease-extension notices from Chesapeake as those being challenged in the Southern Tier suits.
About 40 local residents plan to board a bus early this morning to attend a large rally in Albany to stop the controversial drilling technique known as fracking. The rally comes just two weeks after a hydrofracking well blew out in Bradford, Pa., sending thousands of gallons of tainted water into a nearby creek. A spokesman for the Independent Oil and Gas Association of New York said drilling companies work hard to prevent accidents, but that some are inevitable.
Southern California 'birthers' keep the controversy going
Just when it seemed the controversy over President Obama's birthplace had been laid to rest, a group of Southern California "birthers" had a rare day in federal court Monday to make their case that the president isn't a natural-born American and should be removed from office.
The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals granted Buena Park minister Wiley Drake and leading birther litigator Orly Taitz a chance to challenge the summary dismissal of the case by a Santa Ana federal judge two years ago.
Psych Disorders May Predispose Soldiers to PTSD
For military personnel, having at least one psychiatric disorder before deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan appears to increase the likelihood of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after deployment, the prospective Millennium Cohort Study showed.
The presence of a psychiatric disorder pre-deployment was associated with a 2.52-fold (95% CI 2.01 to 3.16) greater likelihood of post-deployment PTSD, independent of injury severity and numerous other potential confounders, according to Cynthia LeardMann, MPH, of the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, and colleagues.
Sea burial of Osama bin Laden breaks sharia law, say Muslim scholars
Osama bin Laden's burial at sea was quickly criticised by Muslim scholars who claimed it had breached sharia law and warned that it may provoke calls for revenge attacks against US targets.
Others used the sea burial question to question whether he was dead at all, with doubts fuelled by the absence of authentic photographs of his corpse.
Inside Sources: Bin Laden’s Corpse Has Been On Ice For Nearly a Decade
A multitude of different inside sources both publicly and privately, including one individual who personally worked with Bin Laden at one time, told us directly that Osama’s dead corpse has been on ice for nearly a decade and that his “death” would only be announced at the most politically expedient time.
That time has now come with a years-old fake picture being presented as the only evidence of his alleged killing yesterday, while Bin Laden’s body has been hastily dumped into the sea to prevent anyone from finding out when he actually died.
They Cause 40,000 Deaths a Year - But They're Handed Out Like Candy
Taking antidepressants may raise the risk of heart disease in men. They can thicken artery walls through an as yet unknown mechanism.
The drugs seem to accelerate atherosclerosis by increasing the thickness of the "intima media", the inner and middle layers of the arteries. They particularly affect the carotid arteries that feed blood to your brain.
Most people have heard the "chemical imbalance" theory and believe it is true. It is important to realize that there is no scientific evidence for this theory. There is no credible scientific lab test showing the presence or absence of mental disease.
Osama & 9/11...10 Years Later..Have You Seen ANY Proof at All?
I have one question about the so-called killing of Osama bin Laden...have you, in 10 years, seen one sample of proof connecting him to the events of 911? The FBI most wanted list did not mention 911 under his entry. The FBI's response to the questions posed about this was clear, they had no proof of his involvement in the event.
Once again we have a dead man who can tell no tales, or truths, when it comes to the official history of war. Osama joins a long line of mythical villains who die before they can speak to the public or to the courts under verifiable conditions. Every one of Osama's tapes was questionable. There were several face types seen on these tapes and it could not be verified that it was him.
Official sources say that this was a pure KILL MISSION, NOT a CAPTURE MISSION!!!! Why? You know why. This was like the mafia killing a witness to their crimes.
