Ukraine will propose a limited ceasefire during talks with the US in Saudi Arabia, officials say

ukrainians in jeddah A Ukrainian delegation set to meet with America’s top diplomat in Saudi Arabia about ending the 3-year war with Russia will propose a ceasefire covering the Black Sea and long-range missile strikes, as well as the release of prisoners, two senior Ukrainian officials said Monday.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about Tuesday’s meeting, also told The Associated Press that the Ukrainian delegation is ready during the talks to sign an agreement with the United States on access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals — a deal that U.S. President Donald Trump is keen to secure.

The officials discussed the confidence-building measures, with no further details, ahead of the Ukrainian negotiating team’s meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Jeddah.

Kyiv is trying to repair the damage done when Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Feb. 28 visit to Washington descended into an Oval Office argument with Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

Former Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull says leaders must stand up to bullies after being lashed by Donald Trump

Former Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has said leaders should “not give in to bullies” after he was lashed by Donald Trump in a late-night social media post.

Taking to Truth Social platform just before midnight Sunday night in Washington DC, the US president said Turnbull led Australia from “behind” and did not understand China.

“Malcolm Turnbull, the former Prime Minister of Australia who was always leading that wonderful country from ‘behind’ never understood what was going on in China, nor did he have the capacity to do so. I always thought he was a weak and ineffective leader and, obviously, Australian’s [sic] agreed with me!!!”

The post appears to be in response to an interview by Turnbull with Bloomberg in which he said Trump’s chaotic leadership style would benefit China, to the detriment of the US.

RFK Jr directs FDA to revise ‘self-affirm’ rule to improve food ingredient safety

The US secretary of health and human services, Robert F Kennedy Jr, has directed the Food and Drug Administration to revise safety rules to help eliminate a provision that allows companies to self-affirm that food ingredients are safe.

The move would increase transparency for consumers as well as the FDA’s oversight of food ingredients considered to be safe, Kennedy said on Monday.

“For far too long, ingredient manufacturers and sponsors have exploited a loophole that has allowed new ingredients and chemicals, often with unknown safety data, to be introduced into the US food supply without notification to the FDA or the public,” he said in a statement.

Kennedy has promised to address an epidemic of chronic illness with Donald Trump’s backing, but his broad agenda from making food healthier to studying vaccines could clash with government spending cuts.

Mahmoud Khalil President Donald Trump confirmed Monday that federal immigration agents arrested and detained Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and recent Columbia University graduate who was taken this weekend — despite being a permanent legal resident of the United States — for helping peacefully lead antiwar protests on campus last year.

Despite not having a warrant, plainclothes agents abducted Khalil Saturday night as he returned to his university-owned apartment with his wife, a U.S. citizen who is eight months pregnant. Agents claimed they were revoking Syrian-born Khalil’s green card and also threatened to detain his wife, according to a habeas corpus petition his attorney Amy Greer filed on his behalf.

Mark Kelly fires back at Musk over ‘traitor’ accusation

Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) hit back at tech billionaire Elon Musk after he called Kelly a “traitor” for visiting Ukraine and demanding the United States stand with Ukrainians in their ongoing war with Russia.

“Elon, if you don’t understand that defending freedom is a basic tenet of what makes America great and keeps us safe, maybe you should leave it to those of us who do,” he wrote on the social platform X on Monday in response to Musk’accusation.

“You are a traitor,” Musk had written under a previous X post from Kelly in which the lawmaker had reflected on his trip to Ukraine over the weekend“What I saw proved to me we can’t give up on the Ukrainian people,” Kelly wrote in the post.

“Everyone wants this war to end, but any agreement has to protect Ukraine’s security and can’t be a giveaway to Putin,” he added.

Kelly, a former U.S. Navy combat pilot, toured a military hospital and interacted with Red Cross personnel during his visit to Ukraine. It was his third visit to the country since 2023.

Supreme Court takes up challenge to Colorado's ban on `conversion therapy' for LGBTQ+ minors

The Supreme Court on Monday took up a counselor’s challenge to Colorado’s ban on “conversion therapy” for LGBTQ+ minors, agreeing to decide if the ban violates her First Amendment rights.

The court has declined to hear similar challenges in the past, including as recently as 2023 when three of the conservative justices disagreed with that decision.

The increased interest in the bans – which have been enacted in more than 20 Democratic-led states – comes as the court is expected to give a green light to GOP-led states’ efforts to ban gender-affirming care for minors.

Alliance Defending Freedom, which represents the Christian counselor who challenged the law, argues it violates First Amendment rights by “censoring” her conversations with clients.

Largest shark that ever lived: Scientists unlock mystery about the megalodon

The biggest, most formidable shark to have ever roamed the ocean may have been even larger than previously thought, according to a new study.

The research, published Sunday in the journal “Palaeontologia Electronica,” suggests that the megalodon, which dominated the ocean 3.5 million years ago, was more than three times the size of a great white shark.

The monster shark, depicted in the 2018 sci-fi horror film "The Meg," was previously believed to be between 50 and 65 feet long. But the new study, conducted by researchers in 28 countries, found the megalodon could have reached a whopping 80 feet in length, roughly the size of two school buses.

The study helps confirm the hypothesis that the megalodon was not “merely a gigantic version of the modern-day great white shark,” as previously thought, said Phillip Sternes, an educator at SeaWorld San Diego and a researcher on the project. Instead, the shark could have closer cousins today.

1.5M in 3 states could see higher electricity bills as Ontario begins surcharge Monday

Ontario started a 25% surcharge Monday for the electricity it exports to three U.S. states.

Head of the Canadian province Premier Doug Ford has been an outspoken critic of the tariffs President Donald Trump has imposed on imports from Canada, saying he would restrict the electricity exports to Minnesota, Michigan and New York if the tariffs continue.

In a press conference Monday, Ford said they were moving forward with a 25% export fee on electricity for 1.5 million homes and businesses, and may increase it or cut it off depending on Trump's actions.

Ford estimated on average it would add $100 to monthly electricity bills for impacted Americans.

"Believe me when I say I do not want to do this. I feel terrible for the American people, because it's not the American people who started this trade war," Ford said at the press conference. "It's one person who's responsible. That's President Trump."
