Simone Biles’ narrative arc reaches full extension on glorious night for USA

Simone BilesOf course there was theatre at the very end. Two hours into this women’s Artistic Gymnastics Team final, with the USA coasting grandly at the head of the field, the logistics of competition left Simone Biles with one final act to stop the show.

Three years on from Tokyo and The Breakdown, the only discipline remaining in that same team event was the Biles floor routine. And so in front of Bill Gates, Gianni Infantino, Serena Williams and Spike Lee, in front of the eyes of the world as ever, Simone Biles got to dance like no one was watching.

Paris 2024 knew what it was getting with these gymnastics, a spectacle that would play out, as it did here, like a cross between the Super Bowl, Vegas and a Marvel movie. Mainly it was getting America: American flash, American show, American story-telling, the key event in a Games that has for many editions now been powered by US TV money and US sport tourism. Frankly, there haven’t been this many Americans in Paris since 1945.

‘Apocalyptic’ floods in Vermont destroy homes as two dozen rescued by boat

Vermont floods

Thunderstorms and torrential rain brought another wave of violent floods Tuesday that caved in roads, crushed vehicles, pushed homes off their foundations and led to dramatic boat rescues in north-eastern Vermont, nearly three weeks after flooding from Hurricane Beryl.

Flash flood warnings remained in effect through Tuesday afternoon hours after some areas got 6 to more than 8in (15 to more than 20cm) starting late the night before.

In Lyndonville, a village about 40 miles (64km) north-east of Montpelier, the state capital, Deryck Colburn said he awoke before daybreak to a neighbor pounding on his door. Colburn said he heard the same surge of rushing water from an overflowing brook that he’d heard earlier in July, along with the unnerving sound of tumbling boulders carried by the water.

“I went down the road to her house, and there was no road. There was just a river,” he said.

Destruction of Gaza water wells deepens Palestinian misery

Rafah reservoir destroyed by IDF- Israel's military blew up more than 30 water wells in Gaza this month, a municipality official and residents said, adding to the trauma of airstrikes that have turned much of the Palestinian enclave into a wasteland ravaged by a humanitarian crisis.

Salama Shurab, head of the water networks at Khan Younis municipality, said the wells were destroyed by Israeli forces between July 18-27 in the southern towns of Rafah and Khan Younis.
The Israeli military did not respond to the allegations that its soldiers destroyed the wells.
It is not only ever-present danger from Israeli bombardment or ground fighting that makes life a trial for Gaza's Palestinian civilians. It is also the daily slog to find bare necessities such as water, to drink or cook or wash with.
People have dug wells in bleak areas near the sea where the bombing has pushed them, or rely on salty tap water from Gaza's only aquifer, now contaminated with seawater and sewage.
TVNL Comment:  These war criminals continue to destroy water access to Palestinians.

‘It puts everyone in a really bad position’: Black journalists react to Trump joining NABJ panel

Trump

On Monday night, the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) announced that Donald Trump will participate in a panel discussion at the organization’s annual convention in Chicago, which starts on Wednesday.

The announcement, which said that the Q&A would “concentrate on the most pressing issues facing the Black community”, was met with swift online backlash from some Black journalists. They decried the decision to invite a presidential candidate who has lambasted Black journalists, led a movement to squash diversity, equity and inclusion efforts and who is responsible for increased anti-journalistic sentiment, including the popularization of the term “fake news” to describe factual, but potentially unflattering, reporting.

Tiffany Walden, a co-founder and editor-in-chief of The TRiiBE, a digital platform that focuses on Black Chicago, told the Guardian that NABJ’s decision was “irresponsible”.

Project 2025 Director Steps Down, But The Proposals Are As Real As Ever

Paul Dans resigns

Paul Dans, the director of the controversial presidential transition plan known as Project 2025, has stepped down from his role at The Heritage Foundation, Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts confirmed in a statement.

Roberts made it clear that, despite Dans’ departure, the political goals of the right-wing manifesto remain very much alive.

“When we began Project 2025 in April 2022, we set a timeline for the project to conclude its policy drafting after the two party conventions this year, and we are sticking to that timeline,” Roberts said in the statement Tuesday.

“Project 2025 will continue our efforts to build a personnel apparatus for policymakers of all levels — federal, state, and local. I look forward to leading this team to continued success.”

Israeli Court Hears Charge Soldiers Sexually Abused Palestinian At Shadowy Base

De TeimanAn Israeli military court opened an initial hearing Tuesday for nine soldiers detained over what a defense lawyer said were allegations of sexual abuse of a Palestinian at a shadowy facility where Israel has held prisoners from Gaza during the war.

The investigation has stoked tensions between the military command and hard-line nationalists in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government who advocate an even harsher hand in Israel’s conduct of the 10-month-old war in Gaza.

The probe into the incident at alleged torture center Sde Teiman has stoked tensions between military command and hard-line nationalist politicians who want more violence.

The soldiers’ detention Monday triggered angry protests by supporters demanding their release, including members of parliament and at least two government ministers. On Monday, several hundred protesters broke into the facility in southern Israel, known as Sde Teiman, and then later into the military base where the soldiers were being held. Video showed them scuffling with troops before being forced out.

Phosphine discovery on Venus could mean '10-20 percent' chance of life, scientists say

Venus may have lifeVenus, the closest planet to Earth, has an atmosphere similar to ours, but much more hot and full of corrosive sulfuric acid.

Researchers in England announced last week that powerful space telescopes revealed new signs of phosphine gas in Venus' atmosphere, a finding that has been fiercely debated in recent years. There's a chance any phosphine gas on Venus could be a sign of life because on Earth, the gas comes from decaying organic material. Scientists are also confident there is no other natural chemical process on Venus that could otherwise produce the gas, said Dave Clements, the lead researcher on the project.

"We are not saying we have found signs of life on Venus," Clements told USA TODAY. "We are on the first step of a staircase at the top of which, if all the steps are passed, something might lead to that."

Local police spotted Thomas Matthew Crooks' gun: Takeaways from Trump shooting hearing

Assassination atteempt hearingSenior FBI and Secret Service officials painted the fullest picture yet of the communications breakdowns that allowed former President Donald Trump's shooter to open fire and offered other key details about the assassination attempt at a Tuesday Senate hearing.

The hearing focused on the ongoing investigation into how a 20-year-old managed to fire a bullet into Trump's ear at a Pennsylvania political rally.

Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe said he was "ashamed" and "cannot defend" the lapses that nearly led to the first assassination of a current or former president in more than 60 years.

Rowe assumed his acting role last week, after Kimberly Cheatle stepped down as Secret Service director on July 23 as part of the fallout from the attack, which took the life of 50-year-old firefighter and father Corey Comperatore.

More aid for Ukraine

The Biden administration announced on Monday a new lethal aid package for Ukraine totaling about $1.7 billion and largely consisting of missiles and ammunition for missile, artillery and air defense systems the US has previously provided to Ukraine.

The US is committing $1.5 billion in new weapons and equipment to Ukraine through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which will include “capabilities to augment Ukraine’s air defenses, fires, and anti-tank weapons, as well as funding to sustain equipment previously committed by the United States,” according to a Defense Department news release.
