New 250 million-year-old reptile species found in Brazil

Mew reptile found in BrazilPaleontologists have unearthed the fossilized remains of a reptile that lived 250 million years ago in what's now the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Researchers named the new species Teyujagua paradoxa and described it in a new paper, published this week in the journal Scientific Reports.

Study links Splenda to higher risk of leukemia

Splenda link to leukemiaAlthough Splenda has been promoted as a healthier alternative to refined white sugar, a recent study conducted in Italy linked the artificial sweetener to higher risk for leukemia.

Scientists found Splenda significantly increased the risk for leukemia, as well as other cancers, research that is in line with other studies in recent years.

9 firefighters hurt, 3 businesses destroyed in Seattle gas explosion

gas explosion in SeattleSeattle officials say an early morning natural gas explosion that injured nine firefighters and destroyed or damaged businesses in the Greenwood neighborhood was accidental, but investigators are still determining where the gas leak occurred.

At least 36 businesses suffered some kind of damage in the blast, said Seattle Mayor Ed Murray. During an afternoon news conference next to the debris, Murray said police planned to increase patrols in the area to provide extra security.

Severe flooding in Louisiana forces evacuations, school closures

Louisiana floodingA storm system moving through the southern United States killed at least one person in Texas and forced evacuations in Louisiana on Wednesday.

The storms were expected to continue throughout the day with the heaviest rainfall forecast for eastern Texas, parts of Arkansas and western Louisiana, where flash flood emergencies were declared for the parishes of Bossier, Caddo, Webster, DeSoto and Red River due to widespread flooding.

One killed and at least 13 injured in Tel Aviv stabbings

American killed in Tel AvivThree attacks by Palestinians in the space of just over an hour and a half left one dead and at least 13 injured across Israel on Tuesday evening, in incidents that including a mass stabbing in Jaffa during a visit to the coastal city by US vice-president Joe Biden.

Israeli police later confirmed that the person killed in Jaffa was a 29-year-old American tourist who was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital in Holon. There were no details on the American’s identity.

Nine hurt as train derails, car plunges into California creek

train derailment in californiaA commuter train struck a tree and derailed in storm-soaked Northern California, plunging its lead car into a rain-swollen creek and sending passengers scrambling in the dark to get out of the partially submerged car.

Nine people were injured, four seriously, the Alameda County Fire Department said.

Rescuers battled the creek’s fast-moving currents Monday night to pull riders to safety, Alameda County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Kelly said.

US and Iran held secret talks before Iraq warThe United States and Iran held confidential talks about the future of Iraq prior to the U.S.-led war in Iraq, according to a new book by a top Bush administration diplomat.

Among the topics at the talks, Iran agreed not to fire at U.S. aircraft flying over Iran, and the United States wanted Iran to encourage Shiites to participate in forming a new government in Iraq, according to a report in The New York Times about the book.

Foreign diplomats voicing alarm to U.S. officials about Trump

Foreign  leaders warn about TrumpForeign diplomats are expressing alarm to U.S. government officials about what they say are inflammatory and insulting public statements by Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump, according to senior U.S. officials.

Officials from Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia have complained in recent private conversations, mostly about the xenophobic nature of Trump's statements, said three U.S. officials, who all declined to be identified.

"As the (Trump) rhetoric has continued, and in some cases amped up, so, too, have concerns by certain leaders around the world," said one of the officials.

Bowe Bergdahl's attorney wants to interview Donald Trump

BergdalsThe attorney for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, facing a court martial on charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, has requested to meet with Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump in a possible attempt to depose him for repeatedly calling Bergdahl a "traitor."

Attorney Franklin D. Rosenblatt wrote to Trump asking for an interview of up to two hours, CNN reported.

"Based on your personal knowledge of matters that are relevant to Sergeant Bergdahl's right to a fair trial, this interview will help us determine whether to seek a deposition order ... or your personal appearance as a witness at an Article 39(a) session of the court-martial," NBC News reported.
