US pop songwriter Greenwich dies

American songwriter Ellie Greenwich, who penned River Deep, Mountain High and other hits, has died, aged 68.

In a 50-year career, she was awarded some 25 gold and platinum discs. She collaborated with Phil Spector on Chapel of Love and Da Doo Ron Ron. She wrote Leader of the Pack with her ex-husband, which became the basis for a Broadway musical based on her life.

Cheney's Jihad

Cheney's AEI speech was essentially a remix of the arguments that he had made in the run-up to the Iraq war: that if only ordinary American citizens had seen the top secret information he had access to, they would be even more alarmed than he was. And the Bush administration had only prudently taken every measure necessary to keep Americans safe.

Hiding behind a wall of classification has been a quintessential Cheney trope. But that wall just crumbled.

Too Much Radiation From Medical Imaging?

As many as 4 million adults in the U.S. under the age of 65 are being exposed to high, potentially cancer-causing levels of radiation from medical imaging tests of unproven value, according to a new government-funded study.

Analysis of insurance claims for close to 1 million non-elderly adults found that roughly two-thirds had at least one medical imaging test resulting in radiation exposure and one-fifth were exposed to moderate-to-high doses of radiation during the study period.

Setting the people up to die: A conspiracy of silence about swine flu natural remedies

Curiously absent from all the health advice being handed out on the swine flu by the White House, the CDC, the WHO and even the FDA is any mention of Vitamin D or other natural remedies that offer enormous protections from influenza infections.

The absence of this information from virtually all the advice being handed out to the American public is increasingly suspicious. If a pandemic flu is, indeed, threatening to infect half the U.S. population, and if most of the population is deficient in a nutrient known to strongly prevent influenza infections, wouldn't it make good sense to make a few announcements encouraging Americans to raise their vitamin D levels throughout the coming winter?

Report Shows Tight C.I.A. Control on Interrogations

Two 17-watt fluorescent-tube bulbs — no more, no less — illuminated each cell, 24 hours a day. White noise played constantly but was never to exceed 79 decibels. A prisoner could be doused with 41-degree water but for only 20 minutes at a stretch.

The Central Intelligence Agency’s secret interrogation program operated under strict rules, and the rules were dictated from Washington with the painstaking, eye-glazing detail beloved by any bureaucracy.

Camp Lejeune residents blame rare cancer cluster on the water

For three decades -- from the 1950s to the mid-1980s -- the water supply used by hundreds of thousands of Marines and their families was laced with chemicals from an off-base dry-cleaning company and industrial solvents used to clean military equipment.

"The Marine Corps knowingly poisoned their own people," Partain recently said in his living room, surrounded by stacks of military documents and water analysis reports. "They were told about the water, and they did nothing. Nothing. And then they lied about it."

The American Way Of Torture

This is the most professional version of the widespread torture authorized by Bush and conducted in every theater of combat, by every branch of the armed forces, directed that all prisoners could be potential terrorists and therefore outside civilizational norms of humane treatment.

The document reads, like so much else from the Cheney years, like a document from a South American  dictatorship in the 1970s or 1980s. If someone had told me a few years ago that it had popped up in the Soviet archives I would have believed him.

Staggering Indifference and Cowardice of American Media

Within a short 26 years, the United States expects to add 100 million people by 2035.

All totaled, human beings expect to grow from 6.8 billion in 2009 to reach 7.0 billion in 2011. From there, census reports show humans expanding by another 2.0 and possibly 3.0 billion within 40 years.

STAGGERING INDIFFERENCE OF MEDIA, LEADERS AND CITIZENS IN USA

In America, human population numbers add 3.4 million annually to our already unsustainable society—on our way to an added 100 million by 2035.  We suffer carrying capacity issues as to water, energy and food—yet not a peep by the media. News outlets report on “greening” our future, hybrid cars and conservation—but they refuse to deal with the granddaddy of all our problems: hyper-population growth.

Thriving on myths: Television news and the corruption of the American mind

"Even when [news organizations] report the facts," wrote Kurtz, "they have had trouble influencing public opinion."

Did you catch that? Even when they report the facts, as though reporting the facts has become some sort of noble, experimental enterprise within the otherwise (ab)normal course of mainstream journalism, for which Kurtz expected, I guess, awe-inspired applause and instant civic snap-to-it-ness.
