Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said Sunday that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) is an “incredible young lady who has withstood a lot” after attacks on her and other Somali people by President Trump.
“And so, when you looked at the Somalians out in Minnesota, Ilhan [Omar], she is one incredible young lady who has withstood a lot in her life. “It is what made us a great country. And what we’ve got to do is continue that trek toward a more perfect union. We’ll never be perfect, but we should always be in pursuit of perfection,” he added.
Trump has targeted Somali people in recent weeks, posting on Truth Social that “hundreds of thousands of refugees from Somalia are completely taking over the once great State of Minnesota.”
During a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Trump went after Omar, calling her “garbage.” He also said that he didn’t want Somali immigrants in the U.S. and that Somalia “stinks.”
