With the Protect America Act, Bush and his brownshirts are trying to establish the independence of the executive branch from statutory law and the Constitution. The FISA law means that the president is accountable to federal judges for warrants. Bush and the brownshirt Republicans are striving to make the president independent of all accountability. The brownshirts insist that the leader knows best and can tolerate no interference from the law, the judiciary, the Congress, or the Constitution, and certainly not from the American people who, the brownshirts tell us, wont be safe unless Bush is very powerful.

DAVID Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, believes releasing a secret document to the Lockerbie bomber would cause "real harm" to the national interest, appeal court judges were told yesterday.
Mr Miliband has issued a "public interest immunity certificate" against revealing the paper from an unidentified foreign power, which has insisted it should remain confidential and be kept from lawyers for Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi.
TVNL Comment: Terms like "national interest" are code speak. What does that mean? It means that having the public find out that their government lied to them about a terrorist act would expose them as liars.
The document reveals how the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) successfully fought to keep secret any mention of Israel contained on the first draft of the controversial, now discredited Iraq weapons dossier. At the heart of it was nervousness at the top of government about any mention of Israel's nuclear arsenal in an official paper accusing Iraq of flouting the UN's authority on weapons of mass destruction.
