Trump peppers Memorial Day speech with personal boasting and partisan attacks

Trump rant on Memorial Day

Donald Trump honored the sacrifices of US military veterans in the traditional presidential Memorial Day speech at Arlington national cemetery, but also peppered his address on Monday with partisan political asides while talking up his own plans and achievements.

The US president laid a wreath and paid tribute to fallen soldiers and gave accounts of battlefield courage as tradition dictates, from prepared remarks, after saluting alongside his vice-president, JD Vance and defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, who both served in Iraq.

But Trump also veered off into rally-style personal boasting and brief partisan attacks during the solemn event.

Republicans face a future without Elon Musk’s money

Elon MuskTech billionaire Elon Musk is prompting questions about his next steps as he signals he might wind down his political activity.

Last week, the Tesla CEO said he’s planning to scale back his spending after injecting hundreds of millions of dollars into the 2024 election, a big potential blow for GOP campaign coffers moving forward.

The announcement comes as Musk also cools his involvement in the Trump White House to turn more attention to his businesses — even as voices on both sides of the aisle are skeptical that the megadonor will make a full exit from politics.

“Anytime the biggest donor says he’s going to pull back, that’s a concern for the party,” GOP strategist Alex Conant said.

Trump says he wants 'names and countries' of all international students at Harvard

Harvard UDonald Trump said he wants the "names and countries" of every international student enrolled at Harvard University, another step in the president's crackdown on the Ivy League school.

He made the request in a Truth Social post May 25, days after a federal judge blocked the Trump administration's effort to bar the university from enrolling anyone in the United States on a student visa.

"We want to know who those foreign students are, a reasonable request since we give Harvard BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, but Harvard isn’t exactly forthcoming," Trump wrote. "We want those names and countries."

Trump didn't immediately say how the federal government would use that information, or which part of his administration would manage such lists. USA TODAY has reached out to the White House for more information.

DEI dropped: Medical schools won't be graded on diversity amid federal, state crackdown

AAMC

Citing state crackdowns on diversity, equity and inclusion, the organization that accredits medical schools has dropped diversity as a measure of the quality of medical education.

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education on May 19 voted to eliminate diversity programs and partnerships as criteria when it grades the performance of medical schools that confer "MD" degrees to students.

The liaison committee said it acted because new and proposed state laws targeting diversity, equity and inclusion conflict with the accrediting body's standards. Eliminating diversity standards would create "a single set of accreditation expectations with which all schools, regardless of their location and current legislative environment, must comply," the liaison committee said in a statement.

Texas Is Closer To Putting The Ten Commandments In Classrooms After A Key Vote

Texas closer to 10 Commandments in schoolsTexas would require all public school classrooms to display the Ten Commandments under a Republican proposal that cleared a major vote Saturday and would make the state the nation’s largest to impose such a mandate.

If passed as expected, the measure is likely to draw a legal challenge from critics who consider it a constitutional violation of the separation of church and state.

The Republican-controlled House gave its preliminary approval with a final vote expected in the next few days. That would send the bill to the desk of Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who has indicated he will sign it into law.
